Default Unlock iPhone 3GS/3G on 05.14.02,05.15.04,05.16.0x
    Requirements:
    Your CURRENT firmware's ipsw (4.1-4.3.5)
    Redsn0w 0.9.6rc19 OS X:http://https://7490366151266152505-a...attredirects=0 Win:http://https://7490366151266152505-a...attredirects=0
iOS 4.1 IPSW (if not downloaded yet)
iOS 4.3.5/5.0b7 IPSW (if not downloaded yet)
If you have SHSH blobs for 4.2.1-4.3.3 replace the 4.3.5/5.0b7 with IPSW you have SHSH for. For 3GS old bootrom you can just upgrade to 4.3.5 with untethered jailbreak.
    Redsn0w 0.9.8b7c blog.iphone-dev.org/redsn0w-iOS5
    IPSWs: Download iOS Firmware
    1. You need to restore back to 4.1-4.3.3. If you're on those firmwares already skip to step 5 and then final step
    2. Open iTunes and click Shift+Restore on win or alt+restore on mac
    T3. Choose the 4.1 IPSW
    4. Wait till restore ends.
    5. When restore errors out or ends, open redsn0w rc19 and choose "Install iPad baseband" and "Install Cydia" and anything else you would like.
    6. When done, the iPhone will boot. If you want to stay with iOS 4.1, skip to the final step and if not proceed.
    7. Redo step 2 but choose the 4.3.5/5.0b7 IPSW
    8. Open redsn0w 0.9.8b7c when restore errors out, and hit "install cydia"
    9. Install ultasn0w from Cydia, then reboot the good old way, with the sleep button.

Use Redsn0w 0.9.9b1. Go to "Extras->Recovery fix" , enter DFU and let redsn0w do its job. You can also try using Tinyumbrella for that purposes.

Custom firmwares are Jailbroken IPSWs created by Xpwn. Xpwn (Pwnagetool/Sn0wbreeze are GUIs of Xpwn) creates an IPSW that contains the jailbroken filesystem, and lets the device to be restored to a jailbroken state. When using the iPad baseband or a preserved baseband, you need to use a custom *HACTIVATED* firmware to prevent the baseband from being updated, that way preventing error 1015(for iPad baseband users) or the baseband from being updated, as the baseband is not affected in the restore.

How long does this take? I installed 4.1 just fine and then installed Cydia with iPad baseband and it's still at the command prompt on the phone saying please wait. It was on 4.3.5 with the 5.16.02 baseband.

redsn0w rc19 does not have the option to choose "Install iPad baseband". RC16 does and that's where it hangs is at the command prompt on the phone.

    3GS 4.3 (05.16.01)

How long does it take for the "Fetching ipad baseband, please be patient" to complete? It's been 20 minutes. First attempt failed with windows send error popup. Phone was showing the hard drive logo when error popped!

Tried several redsnow versions that accepts 4.2.1 ipsw to install ipad BB but failed. Any ideas?

Twenty minutes is too long. Redsnow 0.9.6rc18 is the latest version which installs the iPad BB with 4.2.1.
