thx all...did manage to resolve all issues and use Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w...iphone 3g working fine with 6.15.

I had two issues: first my redsn0w not recognizing my ipsw file...for that I tried getting a different version.
Second issue I saw was the Redsn0w didnt have a ipad baseband check box. Then I ended up getting another
Redsn0w version. the final one that worked for me is redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5 Guess it was too late in the night
and a long day , so might have not read the instructions incorrectly.

Congrats, amind! How did your gps fare in the BB update? Did it survive? I'm wondering if it's just the folks who update with pwnage tool who manage to keep their gps...

my GPS seems to be ok. But the phone is very sluggish and keeps losing network quite often. The response times have gone really bad.
It almost like my 3G is slowly aging....

iOS 3.1.3 is the best firmware for a 3G.
iOS 4.2.1 is very sluggish. Installing just a few Cydia apps & tweaks will make 4.2.1 almost unusable.

Locations based upon cellular data continue to work. The accuracy GPS provides was lost w/6.15 BB

I can live with an inaccurate GPS. But need to fix the sluggishness and the response time.
Is there an easy way to move from IOS 4.2.1 to IOS 3.1.3 ?

Also, will this fix the "network lost" issue ?

Easy as pie. 3G's do not require SHSH for 3.1.3.

    Download both 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 firmware ipsw's.
    Do a standard shift+restore to stock 3.1.3.
If you get iTunes error 1015, open TinyUmbrella and use "exit recovery" (not fix recovery).

Use redsn0w 0.9.4 but select 3.1.2 firmware when asked. (do not check install iPad BB, already done!)
    Unlock with Ultrasn0w from Cydia.

Note: Cydia can be s..l..o..w on a 3G. Give it plenty of time to finish.

3GS can handle 4.0+ just fine. That only applies for iPhone 3G.

    No
Many believe 4.2.1 is the best overall iOS on a 3GS.
4.1 is pretty good --- especially since Apple is giving it away free now
4.3.3 includes additional anti-jailbreaking code and few reasons to upgrade

I've already updated FW to 4.1 this past weekend.
I was just curious if 4.1 and 3GS would be a good combo
    thanks!

This may be covering old ground, I've only read a few comments back, and thought todays experience might help.....

I've been playing with a 3g with 4.2.1 and 6.15 BB. The owner bought it as faulty and wanted it working and unlocked to Vodafone UK. Anyway, to cut a long days work short, I couldn't get 4.2.1 & 6.15 to play nice with Ultrasnow. Whenever US got loaded the phone refused to pickup any network, even the original one (I tested it was working Ok before the JB). I tried JBing and installing a few times, each time fail.

Performance was terrible too, way worse than any other 3g I've put at 4.2.1. So I tried downgrading to 3.1.3 (my spare iPhone is a 3g and it's on 3.1.3, and I kow this is the best version, as stated above).

So anyway, downgraded to 3.1.3, used Recboot to kick out of recovery, JB's with Spirit and installed Ultrasnow 1.2.3. Phoned worked liked a sweety from the off. Nice and snappy performance. I activated it using a sim from the original provider (o2) and then tried a T-Mobile and Vodafone sim, all worked perfectly.

I've had a few 3g's with the 6.15 BB to "fix" for friends in he past, but I've never had any luck, no matter how many times I tried installing Ultrsnow, or re-installed the OS, or upgraded the BB, I could never get them to work on anything other than the original network, but downgrading to 3.1.3 seems to be the key.

Hope that helps. Might even go make a thread about it!

Can anyone confirm that the following method still works for unlocking an iphone 4?

iClarified - iPhone - How to Update Your iPhone 4 Without Upgrading the Baseband (Windows) 4.3.1

I am currently on 4.0.2 and on t-mobile and this firmware feels so outdated that I want to update to the latest, or best version. Which firmware do you guys recommend that I upgrade to?

Yes that method will still work. What SHSH do you have?

How do I check what SHSH I have? I remember running TinyUmbrella once awhile back and cannot recall when. When I open Cydia, at the top it says "SHSH: iOS 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.2b3, 4.3.3, 4.3.4, 4.3.5" in green.

Latest fully jailbreakable firmware you can go to is 4.3.3 then. I would suggest going the custom firmware route using pwnage tool or snowbreeze though to get there instead of that tiny umbrella method of preserving your baseband.

Do you happen to have a link on how to do it for windows? I'm just afraid I'm gonna lose my unlock because that is more important than updating at the moment. The only method I've heard of is the TinyUmbrella and I'm not even 100% sure on how to do it lol. (Yeah I havent been updated in the JB/UL scene lately)
