Default Need help just activating 2G iphone
OK, I have an older 2G unit that was given to me. No SIM. When I plug the phone into laptop (windows), itunes does not recognize the phone unless I do DFU mode. Then it tries to restore only to end with "error 1601".

My laptop keeps trying to install the phone as a camera. I am running latest itunes. I even uninstalled/reinstalled several times and itunes still will not see the phone (unless in DFU mode).

What am I doing wrong?? I have Blackra1n but it doesn't work for it either.

    I am lost....

Hit restore in iTunes, setup as a new phone. JB with redsnow 0.94, point to 3.1.2, check mark Cydia and unlock, you need BL 3.9. & 4.6 too.

Ok, let me type it again.....itunes errors out EVERY time I try to restore. It gives me a 1601 error every time. I HAVE to use DFU mode to even get itunes to see the phone.

Since youre in DFU mode, try restoring with a custom (pwnd) firmware version. Ive got one if you need it... Gotta love the first iPhone!

Well, I don't know how to do that. I tried to activate on a different computer and it worked except now it tells me I will get email confirmation when activation is done. Been hours now....

Okeey! So you are activating it for a new AT&T account?

Wasn't really wanting to. I would be cancelling within three days. I am just trying to get the phone up and working.

Ive sent you a downloadlink for a customized firmware version, check your msg inbox.

Once you downloaded it, put the firmware file (.IPSW, it looks like a piece of lego) on your desktop so its easy to find.

start up itunes and let it find your iphone (set it in DFU mode)

hold opton (or shift if youre on windows) and click Restore.

locate and choose the firmware you downloaded from me.

Sit back and let itunes do its job..

The firmware is set to automatically activate your phone and unlock it for use with any carrier.

let me know how it works out

If you're running into errors during an upgrade or restore, run iReb to bypass the errors. If that doesn't work, try a different computer.
