Default Wifi OR Unlocked - Why not both? 3GS 3.1.2 05.11.07
    Hi all,

I unlocked my dads iphone 3GS on 3.1.2 using blackra1n I believe and its been fine however wifi has never really worked very well. Now he can not see any wifi networks at all. When I uninstalled blacksn0w via cydia boom his wifi came back. However he was obviously no longer unlocked.

I then tried reinstalling blacksn0w via cydia (and later rock as I read this might fix this issue) but after turning the phone off and back on the wifi is gone again.

It seems he can either have an unlocked iPhone or one with wifi but not both!

I've said I'd take his phone off of him restore to whatever firmware you guys recommend and then jailbreak/unlock. I am on PC and his modem firmware is 05.11.07.

If anyone can help out with some info I'd be very greatful and will then take his phone off of him and try to get it sorted.

    Thanks

What version of blackrain are you using? If it is an older version then go to blackra1n.com and download a fresh copy. Blackra1n has been known to cause this even though Geo points the finger at Apple Even better yet...download a custom firmware from the net(google for one), alter your Hosts file to direct it at Sauriks server so you bypass verification, and then Shift/Restore in iTunes to the custom firmware you downloaded. I use 3.1.2 and it works flawlessly. Try to stay away from having Rock and Cydia on the phone as they fight each other. After you are jailbroken and sure that everything works you can always add rock later. I prefer Cydia as Rock always ends up forcing a restore.

Do not do a network reset! It can, and will, brick your phone. Do a search on it and you will see that it happens all the time. You need a fresh firmware on your phone.

Very Simple, go to Cydia and install ultrasn0w 0.93 (from repo666.ultrasn0w.com)
Press Thanks! If Its Worth It!

Why not go to iOS 4.0? Use sn0wbreeze and Ultrasn0w if you have a suitable 3GS.

I didnt think iOS 4.0 was jailbreak/unlockable with PC?

My personal 3GS when jailbroken has a tethered jailbreak so I assume I can't do so myself?

How would I tell if my dads phone is ok to have iOS 4.0 JB'd and Unlocked?

Think I'll also try ultrasnow too as drmias suggested

Yes, it depends on your bootrom. It's not Redsn0w as per my above post it's sn0wbreeze. Whats the first 5 serial numbers of your dad's iPhone? We can get an idea if it will work from that.

3rd number needs to be 9 (as in 2009) and next 2 numbers need to be below 39 (seen conflicting numbers here, so just hope it's well below 39!) There are other ways to check if it's not clear from this. These 2 numbers are the week in 2009 it was created.

Instead of using sn0wbreeze you could just download custom ipsw file (search google) as for me it worked better.

    Proper check of bootrom instructions:

How to Check iPhone 3GS New Bootrom / Old Bootrom (iBoot) Version | Redmond Pie

Instructions for upgrade if it's old bootrom:

Jailbreak iOS 4 with Sn0wbreeze [Custom Firmware Windows] | Redmond Pie

I think the sn0wbreeze file link is an old version so make sure you hunt for the lastest one. Or use a downloaded custom firmware like I did!
