Default 3GS with 04.26.08 worth keeping?
    What would you recommend?

    iPhone 3GS (model MC149C)
    firmware 3.0.1
    baseband 04.26.08

    Never jailbroken or unlocked.
Currently with Fido (which allows tethering)

I do not need it unlocked, but would like to maintain the ability to do so.

Is the low baseband is worth preserving/exploiting?

Very worth exploiting/preserving since it's still an unlockable iPhone 3gs.

Thanks for the speedy reply. So what would you recommend I do at this stage?

Well if Fido is the official carrier where your located, there's no need to unlock it, unless you want to increase it's value. Lots of iPhone 3gs' got updated to 3.1.3 and that's not unlockable right now so people want unlockable ones. I'd recommend jailbreaking it though, just really brings out full use of the iPhone

Think of it this way: you phone is quite rare with that old firmware on it. You could easily get 40-50% more than what you paid innitially for that phone. Personally I did just that a little under a year ago with my old 3G model.
