Thread: Is it possible to use a SIM based unlock on a 3GS already loaded with 3.1?

Default Is it possible to use a SIM based unlock on a 3GS already loaded with 3.1?
I bought my 2G phone in February 2008 when there wasn't a working software unlock for the OS 1.1.4 that came loaded. I got a local service centre to do me a cloned SIM card to unlock the phone that way. I've kept that cloned SIM in the phone ever since even when I've done a soft unlock on future OS upgrades.

That phone is dying (wifi dead from Ziphone, lots of missed calls, cracked screen, patchy charging, etc.) so I want to buy a 3GS. I can get one from the US but, if I order now, there is a good chance I'll end up with a phone that already has OS 3.1 installed. Will my cloned SIM card allow me to use a new 3GS or have OS/baseband updates blocked that method of circumventing the carrier lock?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I used a number of different "turbo-sims" before the 3.0 unlock came available and none worked properly.

I doubt any of them will be any better with 3.1.

The one I used seemed to work well (although it was a new SIM rather than something that sits in there with your original SIM). But maybe that's because it was a 2G.

I guess what I'm really asking is, if a SIM solution works as an unlock, will it work without the phone also being jailbroken? Or is it definitely necessary to jailbreak the phone in order to activate it using TurboSIM or one of the other SIM solutions?

Just for anyone who is looking for an answer for this question in the future. I checked with the main independent iPhone specialist in Moscow, Russia, (Активация (разлочка) iPhone - телефон работает с любыми операторами! - Megasim.ru) who unlocked thousands of iPhones that came in to Russia from the US before easy to use software tools became available. They told me there is no SIM card solution available right now to unlock a 3GS on firmware 3.1.

So, I've retired my 2G and bought a Nokia N97 instead. The iPhone has many advantages but at least Nokia will actually allow me to spend my hard earned money to buy their phone legitimately and then choose my own network provider. The 3GS is not here yet and, when it does go on sale three months from now, the list price is provisionally $1,300 for an unlocked 32Gb. Just not worth it IMHO but I'll have another look when I next have to buy a phone.
