Default Uk/US iphone? Unlock, anysim...BIG PROBLEM for vodafone unlock
So im really new to the iphone scene having bought an iphone on ebay yesterday. It arrived this morning with an 02 sim inside it. The Sim didnt seem to work (couldnt make calls as i think it had been cancelled) however i could still get on to the phone. (which has been activated and is used),

I inserted my vodafone uk simcard and couldnt use the phone as it was simlocked. However i think the phone is a US phone upgraded to version 1.1.2 from 1.1.1 although it may be a Uk phone. The guy i bought it off doesnt know as he apparently "found" it.

Basicaly i need to know wether it is 1.1.2 OTB or it is safe to jailbreak and install anysim on so i can unlock it to use vodafone (and also how to do this as im a complete noob). If i cant do this should i wait or get a turbosim??
when i checked the phone version it said 04.02.13_G

the odel is also 4gb which o2 uk apparently dont sell furthermore is says version 1.1.2 (3B48a), i dnt know if this makes any difference

    thanks in avance

even though it says simlock to o2 im sure its a us model as there arenumerous references to the US on th phone

it seems as if its an OTB 1.1.2 US Iphone.

Its the only way if its 4gb and has that modem firmware.

There were some pre-release 4GB o2 phones that were issued to the press and bloggers, could be one of those.

Your best bet is just to get an o2 simcard and see if that works

You could try following the guide, there's a chance it could work

It is a big problem, as he just bought an iphone and can't get it to work with his sim. It's easy to sit there all smug and tell him to wait like everyone else.

I already said how it could be a pre-release UK iphone with that firmware.

alick, are you making a start on the unlock.no guide?

One thing you could do is check the bootloader, just to be sure that it's not 4.6 - That can't be unlocked

(copy and pasted from another site)
    Files and programs are here.
    http://rapidshare.com/files/77467556...oader.rar.html

    Install WINSCP
Login to winscp with your ip address. Check your IP in settings, wifi and then blue arrow.
    Username : root
    Password: alpine
If you can’t connect, change file protocol

    Put BBupdater in /usr/bin
    Remove .txt from file
Click rightmouse on file and put permissions to 755
    Close WINSCP

    Open putty
Give ip addrers and username (root) and password (alpine)
    Put this in terminal:

    launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist
    cd /usr/bin
    bbupdater -v
    launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist

You can copy and past in putty (just click rightmouse to past)

Putty is now pinging your baseband and you will get something like this:

    Resetting target...
    pinging the baseband...
    issuing +xgendata...
    firmware: DEV_ICE_MODEM_04.02.13_G
    eep version: EEP_VERSION:208
    eep revision: EEP_REVISION:1
    bootloader: BOOTLOADER_VERSION:4.6_M3S2

It is a problem because i have no idea as to the phone origins and therefore cant check if some of the procedures to unlock it will resultin my iphone bricking.

I can confirm that the iphone accepts the o2 sim card. I hae made a start on that unlocking procedure however i think it unlikely to work. Fuurthermore it is difficult to follow as i dont know what the original firmware is and being new to the iphone world it is difficult to understand how to "virginise" it.

I followed your instrucctions but fell at the first post! I cant seem to connect using WinSCP (i dont know if it makes a difference but i am using vista). Is there any other way if it is safe to unlock?

    thanks for your help!

Don't worry about the phone bricking, it won't, and the term 'bricking' is way overused anyway. It's pretty much impossible to brick a working iphone.

Click preferences/general/about and tell us the Version, first 6 digits of the Serial Number and Modem Firmware version

i thought there was aproblem but everything seems to be going as expected in the downgrade. Once i have finished i will tell you the information.

ok there does seem to be a problem in the downgrade: i have restored the phone to version 1.1.1 but i cannot activate it. I have tried downloading appsnap from jailbreakme.com but it doesnt reboot. It just stays on the same screen sayn "please connect to itunes". I have tried four times and it always restarts on the "activate phone screen".

    Help would be greatly appreciated!

Your iphone is downloading software once you hit jailbreakme.com.

Once it's back at the activation screen, do the *#307# trick, to access prefs, and you should see a box with the downloading percentage. Wait till it's 100% then continue following the instructions. If you don't see the downloading box, then just keep trying jailbreakme.com until you do

The new bootloader was introduced around week 41/42. Though some people with a week 44 have the old bootloader.

It's worrying that your modem firmware is blank! I'm guessing you get no network? Fire up Installer and see if you have a baseband repair program
