    Default Custom Ringtones on jailbroken 1.1.1
    Finally got my phone jailbroken and was curious if anyone has had any luck with uploading ringtones to the jailbroken phone?

    When I use WinSCP I actually can find my ringtones that Itunes 7.4.1 uploaded to the phone, but they have odd names now. There is also a Ringtones plist with the custom sounds, but they are not showing up on the phone for selection.

    I've been playing around in SCP for a while to see if I could get the phone to see them, but thus far no go. Anyone else been playing with this?

    This is the ringtones plist on my phone.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

    Yep, the app works (no errors shown) and plays the 'done' sound but the song is not in the ringtones list after it finishes.

    when the phone was at 1.02 the file protocol I used was SFTP, after 1.1.1 was on and I installed the SSH, that no longer worked. I changed the WinSCP login to the SCP protocal and it then logged me in.

    Nope, but thats a very good idea. I'll have to look for something I want. I actually don't like having songs for ringtones, really just want my crank and CTU sounds.

    But, I'll have to browse and see if I find something. Are you able to tell if its a song that they allow you to make into a tone before you buy it?

    Yeah it will have a little speaker icon in one of the columns.

    I am having a similar issue, I ripped my own tones from ly library, and when Itunes pushes them to my phone they show up as a random 4 digit Alpha name i.e. ADFS.m4r and they don't show up in my tones list.

    I honestly don't really care about any of the other 3rd party hacks. I downgraded back to 1.0.2 simply because ringtones don't work. I'm not going to EVER pay .99 to make ringtones out of music I ALREADY OWN. Please, oh great iPhone hackmasters, figure this out soon as there actually are some cool features in 1.1.1 (just not cool enough to lose my free ringtones).

    Well, bought a ringtone, and below is what the plist looks like now.

    Anyone have any suggestions? It seems that Itoner has a beta out or coming out soon which will sync tones to 1.1.1, but its only for the mac, so not much help to me. But at least it can be done, so thats a start!

    The new plist with a purchased ringtone.......

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

    <key>Total Time</key><integer>7354</integer>
    </dict>
    <key>PBOI.m4a</key>

    </dict>

    </dict>
    <key>QOCC.m4r</key>

    <key>Genre</key><string>Alternative</string>
    <key>Sort Artist</key><string>Verve</string>
    <key>Sort Album Artist</key><string>Verve</string>
    <key>Total Time</key><integer>30535</integer>
    </dict>
    </dict>
    </dict>
    </plist>

    Edit:

    Ok, I did a stupid thing before, corrected it and I am closer now.

    I edited my plist above and changed the custom m4a sounds to the m4r extension, then SCP'ed into the phone and in the Media/Itunes_Control/Rintones folder, renamed the m4a files m4r.

    Re-booted the phone and the ringtones now appear in the ring tone list......but, they don't play. Just dead silence when trying to play them.

    So.....back to tinkering I go.

    If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

    EDIT AGAIN:

    Ok, I think it has something to do with the way the file is encoded, thats the only reason I can think it won't play. Does anyone know how ringtones are suppose to be encoded now with the 1.1.1 update? I could also be totally wrong, but I have the ring tones on my list on the phone, the one I bought plays, the others, just silence.

    i was messing around in the springboard.app the other day and noticed that there is a file called "ring.m4r" i tried to use a audio convertor to change an mp3 file to a m4a and then rename it to m4r and put it there but when i would go to settings, ringtones and click "marimba" or im assuming whatever you had the ringtone set at, it wont play

    try putting a copy of the m4r file into springboard.app and then choosing it in settings > sounds and see if that does anything

    by the way, you may want to rename "ring.m4r" to "ring.m4r.orig" or something like that so you can get it back if it doesnt work

    Just played around a little more.

    I tried putting the ringtone I bought into the /Library/Ringtones directory where all the standard rings that come with the phone are, and to my surprise, it worked. Simply putting the file there made it show up on the ringtones list, and also play.

    Now, tried it with another ringetone and it showed up on the list, but didn't play.

    Nice that simply puting it there makes it appear, just wish I could figure out what flag or whatever the file is missing to make the phone play it.

    It most likely only plays files specifically encoded as .m4r now.
    Seems like the only way to get custom ringtones will be a .m4r convertor.
    Anyone know if this is possible? I know nothing about audio encoding.

    Maybe it's possible to just change the header of the file though.

    LOL man, too funny, I think crank is the best ringtone ever.. People freak out when my phone rings because they have no idea where the sound is coming from.

    Also, I have tried everything that you guys did except mess with the plist.. never had to do that before though. I get silent ringtones all over the place. I used ITunes to convert my .mp3 to .m4a format and tried renaming it to .m4r but no luck. Don't have any other ideas right now except for a possible converter that specific to .m4r?

    I will add this to the discussion...

    I noticed if you use Erica Sadun's playaudio program (from Erica's Utilities) it will play the stock .m4r's..

    Since the command line programs did not require recompiling I highly doubt Erica made any changes to playaudio, yet it can play .m4r files..

    it can also play the custom .m4a files.. *However* if I rename the m4a file (custom ringtone) to .m4r, playaudio won't play it.

    So it's not just Apple's code that's refusing to play it, it's also 3rd party stuff as well.

    I wonder if playaudio is just playing the sound using software on the phone.

    Because all I can think is that maybe it's like their png's.. that they messed with them somehow.

    and of course iToner will come out and work great but they won't tell us HOW they did it, which sucks.
    <madrussian> in russia, you dont remove installer.app, it removes you!
