Default The iPhone 6 Plus Otterbox Commuter Case is Defensive and Lightweight

We showed you the Otterbox Defender series case for the iPhone 6 Plus earlier in the month, and it's the most beastly case we've ever reviewed for the iPhone 6 Plus. Unfortunately, along with beastliness comes the bulkiness factor that the everyday user doesn't want to deal with. On the other hand, it made a great case for those that give their iPhones a beating.

Otterbox has another case for the more lightweight users called the Otterbox Commuter series case. As the name implies, it makes the iPhone easier to travel with by keeping a slimmer form factor, but while still offering a very high amount of drop, bend, shock, scratch, and dust protection. Although less protective than the Otterbox Defender series case, it's probably a better case for the everyday iPhone user that isn't beating the crud out of their iPhone on a daily basis.

As you can see from the photo above, this is basically a two-piece case with a rubber interior that helps cradle the iPhone and a hard plastic exterior that protects the iPhone from shock, scratches, drops, and more. Below, you can see the pieces separated:

Unlike many other two-piece cases, such as the Incipio DualPro case (which is intended for light duty protection), the Otterbox Commuter series case is extremely tough and beefy and would be considered medium to heavy duty protection. The build quality of the parts used are so thick and strong that you certainly feel like you could drop your iPhone off of a cliff and not have to worry about defects down the line.

On the back of the case, you can see how the Otterbox Commuter series case keeps an opening for the Apple Logo to shine through and the rear-facing camera to shine through. Notably, you can tell that the Otterbox Commuter series case doesn't have a protective plastic window covering the Apple logo like it does in the Defender series case. You can also see the Otterbox branding on the bottom rear of the case:

A closer look at the rear-facing camera reveals that the case doesn't get in the way of taking expert photographs, even with the flash turned on. The rear-facing microphone also gets enough of the scene not to sound muffled:

The front of the case leaves a nice wide-open view for the large 5.5-inch retina HD display, as well as the Touch ID sensor, front-facing camera, ambient light sensor, and proximity sensor:

Some closer looks at the front-facing camera area, and Touch ID sensor while the case is installed show a non-obtrusive experience:

From one side, you can see how the case cradles the sleep/wake button with a rubber shielding. We actually like this rubber shielding better than the Otterbox Defender series case, which was harder to press. This case has noticeably more responsive button presses where you can better feel the clicking under your fingertip:

The same goes for the volume buttons on the opposite side, although the ringer/silent switch is exposed to the elements, unlike the Otterbox Defender series case, which has a protective flap for dust:

On the bottom of the case, you can see that there is a nice unobtrusive speaker grille to keep your sound sounding great and un-muffled. The Lightning connector port is covered by a rubber flap, as is the 3.5mm headphone jack, although the bottom microphone has a cut-out similar to the speaker grille to allow sound in:

The flaps are easy to peel back for connections:

The case also includes a light-duty stick-on screen protector to protect the display from scratches, which differs from the Otterbox Defender series case, which has a heavy-duty integrated screen protector. Also, unlike the Otterbox Defender series case, the Otterbox Commuter series case doesn't include a holster to clip the iPhone to your belt or pocket.

The Otterbox Commuter series case is an excellent everyday case for those that need protection and is honestly a whole lot easier to use than the Defender series case. On the other hand, because the case build quality is so nice and the parts are nice and beefy, it can be difficult to install and remove the case at times – you need long fingernails to accomplish smooth case removal.

The Otterbox Commuter series case can be color-customized. You can select individual colors for the outer plastic shell and the inner rubber suspension slipcover. For the outer plastic shell, you can choose from the following colors:

    • Black
    • White
    • Admiral blue
    • Aqua blue

For the inner slipcover, you can choose from the following colors:

    • Black
    • Gunmetal gray
    • Blaze pink
    • Deep water blue
    • Light teal

The case feels right in our hands, and we have little bad to say about it at all. The price is even right, at a very fair $49.90 for the iPhone 6 Plus version and $39.90 for the iPhone 6 version, which is a great price for what you're getting. We're rating the case at 4 out of 5 leaves:
