Thread: Jailbreak 4.2 on a 3G?

  1. #1
    Default Jailbreak 4.2 on a 3G?
I read that redsn0w released the untethered jailbreak for the 3G, is this true and is Cydia working on it?

    I believe it referenced Redsn0w 0.9.6b4

Here is where I found the info, states that the 3G is untethered?

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...jailbreak.html

    From the link:
A group of hackers known as the iPhone Dev-Team released the latest update of their hack, dubbed "redsn0w," with version 0.9.6b4. It is available for both Mac OS X and Windows.

For recent devices -- the iPhone 4, newer iPhone 3GS models, latest-generation iPod touch, and the iPad -- the jailbreak, for now, is "tethered," meaning users must reconnect their device to a computer via USB to re-jailbreak if they need to restart it. Users of the iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS models and second-generation iPod touch (models numbers that don't start with MC) can have an untethered jailbreak.

Ya on a 3G it is untethered, doesn't matter what model you have.

iPhone 3G all have old bootrom so all are untethered. That model MB and MC thing applies to iPod touch 2G.

Okay I found the files needed. When I update should I update through itunes first then jailbreak or just do it all through Redsn0w? Also will I loose apps that I downloaded through Cydia or other sources?

As long as you dont need unlock just update, let itunes activate you, then use redsnow. Yes you will lose all your jailbreak apps so will have to reinstall them.

Many Cydia apps are not ready for 4.2 ... and no unlock is available (yet?)

Are you sure you can't wait a bit longer?

Okay, no big deal as long as I don't loose the saved data?

Cydia is, but some others are not. That's why most are waiting a bit longer.
