    Default iPhone 3G w/ factory 4.1
Ok so here's my story. I come across iPhones all day. 3G, 3GS and 4's. I fix and sell them..

So I have an iPhone 4 as a primary phone and I HAD a 3GS as a secondary (business) phone. I got my hands on a iPhone 3G straight from the Apple Store w/ 4.1 installed. So I thought to myself "hey I'll keep this and sell my 3GS and I'll make more money" So I did and it's gone.

Ok so... yea, not the best idea in the world because this thing is SLOOOOOW on 4.1 It's not as bad as some 3G's I've encountered w/ 4.1 but it gets on my nerves.

So I'm curious can I jailbreak this w/ redsn0w? I've read it will work but I'm not sure if it will with a 4.1 straight from the factory.

I'm thinking disabling all the new features will help make it faster. I don't need a 3GS for my business phone.. but I'll end up going back if this damn thing doesn't get faster.

    So......

    1) Will jailbreaking a 3G w/ 4.1 straight from factory work?

20 Will disabling multitask and maybe other settings make this thing faster?

If speed is what you wanna improve, downgrade it to 3.1.x and jb with Redsn0w 0.9.4.

It's just plain faster than any iOS 4 on a 3G phone.

yes redsnow will jailbreak it. But multitasking should not be enabled right now anyway. You can speed it up a bit by turning off all the spotlight search stuff in settings. Or you can do as Annie said and downgrade to 3.1.3. That is the best firmware for a 3G IMO, speed wise anyway.

    1) download stock 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 ipsw
    2) download Recboot
    3) download Redsn0w 0.9.4
    4) shift+restore in iTunes to 3.1.3 ipsw
    5) receive error 1015 (or any variation of 101x) and use Recboot to kick out of recovery
    6) run redsn0w 0.9.4 (point at the 3.1.2 ipsw)
    7) all done

Darn too quick me for Annie
Had it all typed out too but thought let me refresh first just to see if someone beat me to the punch.

Just to add to what Annie said, tiny umbrella may be easier to use to kick it out of recovery than recboot (The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella) and if you are on official carrier get itunes to activate first before you jailbreak. If you even want to jailbreak at that point.

No it won't. But you should be able to resync most of your stuff.

Ya i don't think that trick worked for going from a 4.1 backup to 3.1.3. I could only ever get it working between 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2.

If you dont want to go ahead with it you can always disable the spotlight stuff i said earlier. Should help a little bit.

Ya it doesnt help much, 4.0+ pretty much crippled the iPhone 3G. You can try a backup extractor to save all your info and put it back that way after a downgrade if you want. Iphone backup extractor (windows) or juicephone (mac).
