Most likely it can not be unlocked unless it's a 2G, Mac or PC?

Follow this link. You should try this first, you may have to downgrade to 3.0.1 but I would give this a try. It has everything you need, files, pics and instructions.

If you put the phone in DFU mode you'll be fine. But to be honest I think your gonna have to downgrade to 3.0.1 for this to work. But lets give it a try. Once you download all the files from the link I gave you, put in DFU mode and do a hold Shift/click restore and point to the restore .ipsw file that you will download. after it restores (if it does) then run redsn0w to jailbreak it.
    DFU mode
    INSTRUCTIONS
    Step 1. Turn off iPhone
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that it detects iPhone in restore/recovery mode.

    Alternative method.
Step 1. While the device is on, hold down the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons for exactly 10 seconds, the device will restart.
Step 2. Release the Sleep / Wake button, but keep holding down the Home button for another 10 seconds.
Step 3. Release the Home button.

If it's in DFU mode the screen should be blank and black, should be no way you would get that error if it were. Try some more.
