Thread: Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with PwnageTool 3.1.4

Default Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with PwnageTool 3.1.4
The infamous iPhone Dev-Team has updated its PwnageTool for Mac to make it compatible with the new iPhone 3.1.2 firmware which was released last week. This latest version of PwnageTool can jailbreak the original iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (1G and 2G) running on iPhone firmware 3.1.2. The custom .ipsw firmware files created with PwnageTool can update iPhone to firmware 3.1.2 without updating its baseband so that it can be unlocked to run on any carrier SIM. Also added is the support for jailbreaking iPhone 3GS which are already updated to firmware 3.1.x (including 3.1.2), either out of the box, or directly from iTunes.

The new iPod touch 3G is currently not supported. Complete tutorial/guide on how to jailbreak iPod touch (1st and 2nd generation) running on firmware 3.1.2 can be found here.

Note For Windows XP/Vista/7 Users: PwnageTool 3.1.4 is for Mac OS X only. Windows users should follow the instructions posted here in order to jailbreak and unlock iPhone running with firmware 3.1.2.

The following step-by-step instructions will help you jailbreak your iPhone running on iPhone firmware 3.1.2 with PwnageTool 3.1.4 :

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes.

Step 2: Now start iTunes and sync your iPhone with your PC so that it backs-up all your important data including settings, apps, music, contacts and photos.

Step 3: Download PwnageTool 3.1.4 and the original iPhone OS 3.1.2 for your version of iPhone (download links given below). Move all these files to your desktop.

Step 4: Start PwnageTool 3.1.4 and select your device.

Step 5: PwnageTool 3.1.4 will now automatically detect the correct firmware for your device.

Step 6: Click on "No" when PwnageTool asks you “Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?”
Clicking on “Yes” will update your baseband to the latest version which will make your device almost impossible to unlock. Click on “Yes” only if you are on an officially supported carrier like AT&T.

Step 7: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone which will be jailbroken.

Step 8: Now you will have to restore your iPhone to this custom firmware 3.1.2 that you just cooked using PwnageTool 3.1.4 for your iPhone. Click on your phone from the sidebar in iTunes

Now press and hold left “alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your downloaded custom firmware 3.1.2. Select that custom .ipsw file and click on “Open”.

Step 9: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone. Your iPhone screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, iPhone will restart automatically and you should now have a fully jailbroken iPhone 3GS running on firmware 3.1.2.

How to: Unlock iPhone on 3.1.2:
You can now follow the tutorial/guide posted here to unlock your iPhone on firmware 3.1.2 using ultrasn0w.

Step 10: Once you are done with the unlocking and jailbreak process. You can now restore all your settings, apps, music, contacts and photos to the newly installed firmware version 3.1.2 by restoring the backup that you made in Step 2 from iTunes.

Feel free to ask me any question here should you run into any problem during the jailbreak process.

Disclaimer: This guide is for testing & educational purposes only. Follow it on your own risk. I’m not responsible for any loss of important data or malfunctioning of your iPhone.

    UNLOCKING

The following step-by-step tutorial/guide will help you unlock your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS with the latest iPhone 3.1.2 firmware using ultrasn0w. This unlocking guide applies to iPhone 3G and 3GS only. iPhone 2G users can simply follow the guide I posted here to jailbreak and unlock with firmware 3.1.2.

Note: This unlocking guide will work for you only if your Modem Firmware (Baseband) version is 04.26.08. If you have upgraded directly to iPhone 3.1.2 stock firmware from iTunes then you are pretty much out of luck for now.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you haven’t already.

How to: Jailbreak iPhone on 3.1.2:
Step 2: Follow the guide here to jailbreak your iPhone 3G or 3GS using PwnageTool on firmware 3.1.2.

Step 3: Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can now unlock your iPhone running jailbroken firmware 3.1.2 by using ultrasn0w 0.9. To do this:

Note: T-Mobile users should disable 3G before installing ultrasn0w.

    *Start “Cydia” on your iPhone.
*Touch on “Manage” tab on the bottom.
    *Now touch on “Sources”.

Touch on “Edit” and then on “Add”. You will be prompted to enter a url source as seen in the screenshot below. Type “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com” and touch on “Add Source”.

Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.

After installation is completed. Search for “ultrasn0w” in Cydia and install this application. This app will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier.

Step 4: Now simply restart your iPhone. Voila! You are now running a fully unlocked and jailbroken iPhone firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone 3G or 3GS.

Feel free to ask me any questions here should you run into any problems when unlocking your iPhone.

    ENJOY!

For Windows users, you will need to get a custom made IPSW from someone or the internet. Then....

Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes.

So I got Pwnage tool 3.1.4 and followed the instructions in the guide, but I get an error. I've re-read it several times now to check that I didn't make some stupid mistake but nothing...

"The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred. (1604)"

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem could be?

will there be a pwnage tool released for windows based pc's?

(not that don't trust someone to make me cfw), but i'd like to be able to make my own.

I know this is off topic, but is there a way i can copy my cydia apps so i don't need to download them all again after updating (this is one of the reasons i haven't updated yet).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

As per the devteam they wont be making a windows version of pwnage tool nor redsnow.

U will have to download your cydia apps again as when you upgrade a new cydia is installed which does not have track of your previous cydia installed apps.

HELP... I am attempting to jb a 3Gs on 3.1.2, on my iMac running 10.6.1. using Pwnage 3.1.4. I get all the way to "connect USB" and nothing happens, but the ipsw custom is saved so I tried restoring in itunes (itunes recognized as in restore mode) and also have tried from DFU mode, it sits at "preparing to restore for about 10 minutes.. but I never get to the time bar showing the progress like when I do a regular restore, and then I get a 1600 or 1604 error... I have double checked my software downloads, including itunes newest and 3.1.2, but cant figure out what the deal is.. can anyone help? (((note.. I do not have an activated SIM in the phone (I use ATT and do not intent to unlock) but there is a dummy in, plus I tried it with the SIM in the phone and nothing changed.))) My activated SIM is in my other 3Gs so that I am not phoneless, I am "practicing" on this one, which I obviously need more of :-)

    I"m getting the same 1604 error message. I'm running 3G 3.1.2 win.

I found a package for my phone to follow the guide, titled, "iPhone3G if u have an UNOFFICIAL CARRIER: iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore -1Gb ACTIVATED NO LOGO with CYDIA & ICY"

It all went fine. However I remember in the past when I was on 3.0.1 I avoided Icy due it it stirring trouble with Cydia.

Is there a way for me to remove Icy from the ipsw somehow? Since for us on windows using this "fixed" jailbreak method we don't get to choose Cydia or Icy. It just installs both for us.

    Thanks!

Mine gets stuck on "preparing iPhone for restore" and then the restore fails. Not sure what to do!!!

  21. #16
I'm also getting a 1604 error when attempting to restore a 3GS using an IPSW created in PwnageTool 3.1.4

  22. #17
I have the 1604 error as well!

Does anyone know the bootloader and baseband version for the 3.12 firmware? (im running 3gs on 3.1 with 5.11.07 )

This sucks. I just want to jailbreak this phone! same error for me..

  24. #19
Same error for me too. no matter if I try in DFU or Recovery mode.

I feel as tho I've tried everything and nothing's working.

I was JB'd at 3.0 but then lost it at 3.1.1 and now I'm at 3.1.2 and can't JB because of 1600 or 1604 error.

All of the forum posts I've found about this error have absolutely no resolution that works for me. But I find that lots of people are having this error which means I'm pretty sure I'm not doing something wrong. I think the Pwnage 3.1.4 tool just doesn't create the correct custom restore package for a phone that used to be JB'd then wasn't and now is trying to be JB'd again.

Anyone care to try to help?
I'll gladly buy you a beer if you can.

I would get the 1604 error on Windows and Mac so I ended up just running Blackra1n and that worked within a minute.
