Normally, error 1600 can mean you were trying to restore the wrong 3.1 firmware for your iPhone 3GS or your iPhone 3GS was not running 3.0 / 3.0.1 that is already jailbroken.

Once you update or restore a stock 3.1 firmware in iTunes, you are screwed (No jailbreak or unlock). This is because it updates the baseband (modem FW) from 4.26.08 to 05.11.07.

If this is not the cause and you have not updated past 3.0.1, make sure you put your iPhone 3GS into Recovery mode and press Option+Restore in iTunes and then select your custom 3.1 firmware.

To put your iPhone 3GS into recovery mode:

    1. Turn the device completely off and disconnect it from cable/dock.
    2. Hold down the home button.
    3. While holding down the home button connect to a computer with the USB cable (easiest) or dock.
    4. Keep holding down the home button until you see a connect-to-itunes screen You are now in recovery mode.

screwed as in no unlock/jailbreak. pop a at&t sim in and use it, or use it to hold down papers on windy days
    1.1.1>1.1.2>1.1.4>2.0>2.1>2.2>3.1>3.1.2 blackra1n'd

I was having the same issue on the Mac, so I took the custom firmware to my PC and did a restore with it. (without it in DFU or recovery - just on normally) works great.

I understand that it violates MMi rules to post custom firmware. Does it also violate the rules to direct someone to a site.

I googled custom firmware but want to use only a reliable or trustworthy site. Any suggestions on a good download location?
