I am currently running custom firmware 3.1.2 from sinfuliphone
if I don't want to upgrade to 4.0, would I need to save my shsh to continue using my firmware (i.e. if I needed to restore in the future and don't want to upgrade)

On 3GS? Then yes you will need SHSH blobs to be able to downgrade or restore.

Have you saved them before this with Cydia or anywhere else? If you haven't by now, you pretty much can't.

If your ipod stops working and you need to restore, you're going to have to go to the latest version to restore and that may or may not be jailbreakable at the time. Just hope it doesn't stop working.....

You can only save SHSH files for the most current version of firmware apple has at the time, this is because apple stops signing the old firmwares when the new one comes out.
