Perhaps others could help me understand this because I'm a bit confused. It has been mentioned before (more often on the Apple support boards), but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. iMovie, along with some apps by third parties all, for one reason or another, require access to location data to be able to access the camera roll (or anything else in my photo/video library for that matter). There's no explanation provided, and again there's no apparently clear answer. I could understand the camera itself using the data for geotagging, but for the apps used to manipulate those to require location data? That's a bit much.

Does anybody have a clear answer as to why they might need this information?
