Thread: How to run your own Installer.app source repository.

Default How to run your own Installer.app source repository.
I've looked into this and it's really not hard at all. You need to create a .plist file (xml file) with the right information in it, and set the content-type of that .plist file on the webserver to be application/x-apptapp-repository.

I left the info at home, but I'll see if I can't post up an example. You can usually set the content-type of a file by editing the .htaccess file in the same directory as the .plist file and the statement "AddType".

More details to come. Since anySIM has been removed from the beta repo at ConceitedSoftware, I had hoped to write this up so that we can get lots and lots of mirrors going.

This sounds like a great opportunity for a new post in the Guides section.

I have some extra web space, and would like to setup a repository. I'm looking into what the original poster said. I supposed if he found it, it's out there somewhere. If you're still out there though, I hope you didn't forget about us. It'd make this process a little easier. In the meantime, I'll be consulting the allmighty Google for assistance.

Just an FYI - even if a user doesn't download anything from your 'source' be prepared for a lot of bandwidth usage. Everytime the "Refresh" button is clicked, it pulls your .xml info again. When I was hosting a simple web page with like 400k of (image) data for theme previews I saw my bandwidth increase to around 6GB in about 8 days.

STE says he is now averaging around 1GB per day in just .plist updates (Refresh hits) alone and that doesn't include the bandwidth to say download a 2MB SummerBoard theme or any other iPhone app!

I agree...Napster dies and 7 others popup in its place(limewire, Kazaa, ect...) Its that way with anything. What they should have done is create a special piece of hardware that you hook into your iPhone that makes all this possible. Remember the Gameboy reader/writers and the sat tv descramblers. If you gotta buy a special piece of equipment to get it to work you can charge for it and very few people can duplicate that piece of equipment...but if its a simple program and a usb cable nobodys makin money.

Setting up one is fairly easy, just gotta make sure you have enough bandwidth. There is so many people on installer, that just above every second of the day someone is opening, hitting refresh or downloading on their installer and grabbing info from my server. Crazy stuff
