Are there any apps to send and recevie FREE SMS messages? So it would bypass ATT (USA) servers and not charge me a text message.

Example...You type up a message and hit send. It goes out to a server thru ur data package and out to the persons handset as a text message. And you do dont get hit with a text messaging charge.

There was one called Infinite SMS which was $.99 at the App Store but it became too popular and used something from Google so Google shut it down.

I don't know of any other one at the moment.

You can use any IM client on the appstore, but they will see that they recieved a text from your IM account.

The new Yahoo Messenger app is great. Add your friend's mobile number to their Yahoo ID and just press the IM/SMS button to text them. They get text messages like "your_yahoo_id: your message here" but you don't pay anything for the app and the text messages just use up data (not a problem if you have an unlimited plan). If the person you want to text doesn't have a Yahoo ID, just make one up and add their number. You'll still be able to text them. And with push coming this summer - hopefully Yahoo will use it in an update of Yahoo Messenger - you'll get your replies just like you do for normal texting.
Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?

If I helped you, be sure to press the Thanks! button over there ->
If I didn't, press it anyway.

    Smile GV Mobile (Google Voice)
You can get free SMS through google voice available through Cydia. You have to request an invite from google. So far mine hasn't come, it's been about two day. This is a sweet program and would interface a lot better with the iPod and you would have to worry about reconnecting to a IM service when you put the iPod to sleep or go out of range of wifi. It would work a lot like the mail client. Check that out.

Textfree Unlimited is the best way to go. Push notifications also.

i would say google voice is the best out there. Free international text as well, bad part is u have to have a jailbroken iphone to get it from cydia.
