Thread: iBirthday.

    Lightbulb iBirthday.

Check it out, so far it is in italian, but this is trully a great app. Any chance someone could try to release an English version of it, by just translating the actual one?

    This works very well!

You can get it from installer by adding this repo:

    http://www.serverasp.net/chiafa/MMA/repo.xml

A word of caution though. This is what happened to me on my 112 phone & it might not happen to you, but just to be safe...
After the installation & going back to Springboard, all the icons were gone.
I SSH'd into the phone I looked at my M68AP file, and the contents of the iBirthday's .plist replaced the contents of my M68AP file. I just copied my backup plist over, restarted, and all was fine. While I was looking at the files & folder that were installed, I also noticed that the iBirthday folder in /user/local/bin/ had NO permissions set.
So if you decide to get it via installer, be safe & make a copy of your M68AP.plist first, and stay SSH'd. Also, after the install, make sure the permissions are set correctly for the iBirthday folder.

After all that I tested it as the author suggested, and it works perfectly, even in standby. This is an Italian app though, so the onscreen message is in Italian.

For those who want to install in manually, I've made a MODIFIED zip file from the zip I got from their repository. Basically just unzip on your computer. Then copy com.chiafa.Birthday.plist to Library/LaunchDaemons
and the BirthDay folder to /usr/local/bin/ on your iPhone.
NB. make sure the permissions are set to 755 for all the files, and restart.

I have translated the Italian message to English, and changed the alarm sound to a more 'happy' happy birthday alert.

Kudo's to the author of this app - it works!

Edit: Modified the translation a bit.

If you don't want to use this method, just wait a bit.

This is from the author (chiafa):

Hi, sorry to write in English, but I can't speak italian.

Great application, really, one of the most useful so far. Don't mind me asking, but is there the slightest chance the owner could make an English version of it? Or at least help me to figure out how to translate the original file that has been installed to my phone?

    Many thanks.

I'm already working for a localized version (Italian/english). Be patient... maybe next week I will publish the new version

    Thanks!

Tried it on a v1.1.1 iphone. Every file is set to 0755. Re started phone, created a new address book entry with today's date as the birthday. Waited till it is 10am and no alarm or bday window pops up.

Perhaps someone can say what the app actually does? iBirthday is not descriptive at all.

From the italian forum quoted earlier, I understand that your phone will vibrate, sound and pop a window informing you of someone's birthday at 10am of the birth date. The info comes from the birthday field in your address book.

    Here it is:

    www.serverasp.net/chiafa/MMA/repo.xml
e nella sezione ModMyApple.it troverete l'applicazione "iBirthday".

    Datemi qualche conferma!
Jrentze, is there any chance you could mod the app with the following text, instead of the actual English ones on your file:

Happy Birthday!!! (ACTUAL) --> (REMODED) Reminder
Todays birthday is (ACTUAL) --> (REMOEDD) Today's birthdays

    Thanks in advance.

OMG, I wouldnt want another battery-draining daemon running just for that! Just enter birthdays on the calendar app.

BigBoss, I was wondering about that myself. When I use SysInfo to look at the processes that are running, Birthday shows CPU 0.0%. Does this mean that it is not draining the battery? or how can one tell any other way? (other than the battery 'seemingly' running down quicker)

  12. #11
v1.1a is out with Italian/English translation.

  13. #12
is there a way to disable the text once you've seen the message and also is there a way to change the time the alarm is set i.e. instead of 10am, have it at midnight?

  14. #13
    v1.2 is out.

It now has an icon for springboard. From there you can switch the daemon off/on, set the time of day it should alert you, on which day it should alert (eg. today, 1 day before, etc) and also if it should display the message on the springboard or not.

    Nice update!

ps. make sure about the permissions after the install - it doesn't seem to set all of it properly.

  15. #14
Hey Jrentzke, wich program did you use to modify the messages?

Can you please tell me the name? The new version is great, but I still don´t like the original message. LOL.

    Cheers.

  16. #15
You can modify the localizable.string in this path:
    /usr/local/bin/BirthDay/English.lproj

    Enjoy

Well, this is virtually useless. I guess it's fun for the developer to mess around with though.

    nice app, thanks!

    two things:

if by a chance my phone is not being used at the exact time i set iBirthday to inform me of an upcoming birthday (which might happen from time to time..) - i am never informed of that birthday, and that's a shame.. maybe you need to consider checking birthdays on a preset interval?..

second thing, how can i change permission in order to access the BirthDay folder? - when i hookup via SSH and trying to sudo chmod 755 it still says access denied..

    thanks!

    edit
second issue solved - simply went into a terminal from the iphone itself and chmoded the folder..

The daemon remains alive in sleep mode so you will warned of birthday in any case... and you will see the alert just come into your iphone

How it will handle multiple birthdays in same day? Why if set to 1 day advance reminder, it does not show today's events?

  22. #20
This does not seem to be working for me. Any suggestions? I have set every file to 755 permission. Nothing still. It will open up and let me configure settings but nothing happens. Also every time I open it, the app is set to off.
