Thread: ModMyi.com is All New . . . take 3ish

My comments are based on what I see you post. Every time I see you post it seems as though your telling someone to take a flying leap. I do believe one of the great contributors, Ian Nicol, left this forum based on what you did/said to him. All I'm saying is that there is no reason to tell people to let the door hit ya on the way out. You asked for opinions and now that you got them you don't like them. All that has ever been said about the color scheme is that there MAY be something long down the road. Well in the mean time you will lose people if you don't make that more of a priority. Seeing as how that's what 90% of the people are complaining about, might not be a bad idea to fix the main concerns that people have. Motivated or not, doesn't much matter to me anymore, your lack of professionalism continues to shine in moments like these.

Adding more options is a priority and if going back to the old theme was an option we would have already done so.

What isn't an option is making a bunch of style options available before the bugs are sorted out. Doing something like that simply multiplies the number of bugs we need to fix and it will take longer to get the site functioning properly with everyone happy.

The most direct and quickest way for everyone to get what they want is to fix the bugs in this theme, make copies, and add different color options which is why we have asked repeatedly for people to post up issues that haven't already been posted numerous times. In this manner we can add them to our list, get them fixed asap, and get some theme options up for everyone's tastes post haste.

The older scheme was more user friendly... I'm constantly scrambling to find my way around the forum now.

Thank you!!! That's much better and finally a reason was given as to why! That's all that anyone needs to hear, if there's a reason it needs to be done after the rest then at least we know why. I truly appreciate that last response, it was knowledgeable and informative.

One thing I learned a long time ago when working on sites where a completely new version of a forum/CMS/etc was called for which was incompatible with the current themes and addons, was to set it all up first in an alternate folder (e.g., domain.com/new) or subdomain (e.g., new.domain.com) and get everything working there first and usually left it open for the user base to test out, while the main site steamed on until the new one was fully. Once I embraced this method of upgrading, it really helped things go much smoother in the long run. Users posted feedback in the test site's forum, things moved along, and the main site never got interrupted during that process and the change over was smooth. Every single time after I started doing things that way. For just over 10 years now.

So perhaps what I'm trying to convey here, if it's possible (if the old site/forum files and db still exists -- you keep regular backups, right? -- wouldn't a better solution here be to revert back to the old site while the new one is being sorted out?

    P. S.
Regarding the inability to use the old skin, I really understand what that is, but when ever I've been in that same boat as you guys, I've still been able to use art, css, and other visual elements of the previous one to make a new skin. It might not be easy in a case like this where the core forum templates have changes so much, but experience tells me it may at least be a good idea for a secondary theme (ie, "MMI Classic" or similar,) though I'd like to urge you all to consider trying to weave some style cues from the old theme into the new creation.

Thanks and good luck. And if you think you could use another experienced person among your crew, I'd be more than happy to volunteer my time to help (though after the weekend as I'll be out of town for Memorial day.) Feel free to shoot me a PM or email.

When people are working their butts off trying to fix things constant criticism can be very wearing.
They know the problems and I'm sure will have things sorted soon.
Keep up the good work guys

Haha, yeah, we actually had the theme running on a test location for around a month with the moderators and some other folks testing it out. Their feedback wasn't nearly as harsh as the general consensus so far. Also overlooked a few settings and plugins on the test site which have impacted things negatively here.

Problem with reverting is that taking a week-old backup and putting it live is counter productive to the site in general, everything posted in the last week would not be available in the backup. Importing the new posts etc from vb4->vb3 really isn't a viable option and undoubtedly we'd receive a ton of hate for losing data -- no reason to add some more reasons for hate on top of the style hate.

As far as visual things go we believe once we get this white theme visually sorted with the things on our current to do list then it will translate into a visual style that people who have issues with the white will enjoy once we get some color options up. I confident that we'll have this whole thing sorted including some color options that will satisfy everyone within a weeks time. Until then ceist la vie.

Thanks, if you happen to be an expert on vb4 i'd probably take you up on the offer . . . specifically there are some really frustrating load things that aren't making much sense (js/css loading out of line/last/sporadically when it really shouldn't be) that likely have something to do with how vb4 works vs how the previous vb3 worked.

Sorry about my earlier post, I haven't read the edit. The only real bug I have noticed is that the pictures are cut off by the ads, you can't even scroll to see them. Other than that it is just the mobile app, which I see you have already have noticed. However, I would appreciate if the ads were on the left, like before. It makes more room since there is already a blank space there.

Huh? I thought the ads were on the right before also, weren't they?

Most ads were on the right, but we used to have an view option, left or right.

    Adding to the to-do list.

Signature size needs to be reduced, some are going a bit overboard.
