Thread: Real world test of 850mhz

Default Real world test of 850mhz
So I have been doing field tests on my *iPhone around NYC. In case you don't know How to do a test if you type *3001#12345#* Thanks to Z3r01 for the correcting me.
you type it in your phone pad and press call.

if you would like to see if your connected to a 850mhz tower please see the attached images for more details.

first tap UMTS Cell Enviroment> UMTS RR INfo> look at download/upload link.

if your download link / upload link are in the 4380 area than you are using the 850mhz band. if you see a number in the 65000 area than thats 1900mhz, some may see 412 i'm not sure but i think thats 2100mhz.

Withing the field test you can see which frequency your iPhone is connected too while on 3G.*
Since AT&T announced that they are switching 3G to the 850mhz band. I took it upon myself to see if it's working.

So the answer is yes the 850mhz band is up and running but my iPhone doesn't always pick it up.*

Now that's the problem I'm having. I don't know wether it's the iPhones problem or AT&T. When I go into the field test I'm rarely ever connected to the 850mhz band, but If i turn off 3G and than reconnect to 3G than it connects to the 850mhz band but for whateer reason the iPhone prefers the 1900mhz band beacause I soon as i start moving and the iPhone switches to anoter antenna it reverts to the 1900mhz band.

I hope someone here can shed some light into my problem. Because when I'm on 850 I get a perfect signal of -50 and when I switch to 1900 the signal gets a lot weaker and usually goes up to -80 even when outdoors.

So is it that AT&T hasn't completly finished all of the upgrades or the iPhone jut favors the 1900mhz band eventhough it's much weaker than 850mhz.*

Maybe all of the towers you are moving around in do not have the updated 850mhz capability.

i'm leaning to think thats the prolem, but at the same time in my house i can pick up a 850mhz signal and its strong. but as soon as i move the phone switches back to 1900mhz and the signal is weaker. so i don't understand why it does that, because the phone should choose the stonger signal.

What about these numbers? They don't seem to fit anywhere.

I'll have to do some research when I get home and figure it out. Are you in an area in which AT&T deployed 850mhz 3G coverage?

Also press the refresh button in the field test mode and or move around and see if the frequency changes.

Welcome to 850mhz 3G, lol. It doesn't feel any faster but the signal is much stronger than before. I'm going to call AT&T tech support and see what they say about the frequency changes I'm having.

What's is your signal strength -50 being perfect signal -115 being no service.

    I'm in Shreveport, Lousiana.

    Uplink - 4157
    Downlink - 4382

    Signal Strength -95

This reading was taken at my house in the living room. I have wifi at home though so I rarely use 3G when I'm there but it's nice to know I have it just in case.
