Default HydraDock: A New Kickstarter Campaign for Improving the Versatility of the New MacBook

Apple's brand-new MacBook, which recently scored a saddening 1 out 10 in repairability from the tech gurus at iFixit, comes with just one port on the side – a USB-C port. There is a lot of new tech packed into this new little MacBook, but using the new MacBook comes at the cost of having to choose between using accessories with the machine or charging the machine, due to the same port being used for both and limiting multi-tasking.

That's where a new KickStarter campaign called the HydraDock aims to come to the rescue. This new accessory plugs right into the USB-C port on the side of the MacBook and offers a wide variety of I/O options (11 to be exact), such as:

    • 1 — 3.5mm stereo headphone port
    • 1 — Gigabit Ethernet port
    • 1 — SDXC card slot
    • 1 — Mini DisplayPort (up to 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, w/HDCP)
    • 1 — HDMI (up to 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, w/HDCP)
    • 4 — USB 3.0 ports
    • 2 — USB-C ports (data only, no video)

Moreover, as shown in the pictures, it can double as a notebook prop, which places the keyboard at a more comfortable angle rather than completely flat on a desk.

It's not the prettiest solution to external ports for something like the new MacBook, especially if you're buying the new thin MacBook for portability purposes, but if you're thinking in terms of function over form where desk-use is your most common use for the new machine, then this could definitely come in handy for those that use USB ports and external video ports but don't want to buy every single dongle accessory from Apple's online store for $100+.

The HydraDock also comes with bonus USB-C to Lightning and USB-C to 12v cigarette lighter/power port adapters so that you can plug your iOS devices into the new MacBook, as well as charge it from your vehicle.

How about price? – the HydraDock can be yours if you pledge $129. If you want the additional USB-C to Lightning and USB-C to 12v adapters, then you'll have to pledge $169 to the project. As of this writing, $25,143 of the needed $35,000 has been pledged and there are still 28 more days to go, so the campaign is close to seeing reality.

You can check out the project at this link via KickStarter.

$130 for the dock plus anywhere from $25 to $50 for the cables needed? No freaking way I would pay that much for a dock.

    What... Are you on about...?
Most people already have a Display port cable to going to a TV, most people already have USB3.0 cables.
Apple want you to pay $19 to $80 for 1 port each?
This is double the price, comes with an extra USB Type=C port, 4 USB 3.0 ports and more?

If Apple were selling this it would be the price of the MacBook

Just wait till other manufactures build USB Type-C into their notebooks, the price of these docks will drop to $30
