Default Apple to Allow Felons to Work on Campus 2

As MMi reported earlier this week, Apple suddenly found itself faced with criticism in the wake of news that the company does not allow convicted felons to work on its Campus 2 -- the now famous Spaceship Campus.

While Apple certainly isn't alone in its controversial decision to keep felons away from its construction projects, the company felt enormous backlash. “There are certain positions where there is some nexus between the crime committed and the position offered. Construction does not appear to be one of those,” State Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco was quoted by SFGate. “In this situation, I would strongly suggest that this policy be changed.”

Consequently, Apple has been lobbied to reverse its policy. And on Thursday, news came to light that this is exactly what Apple has done.

"It recently came to our attention that, as part of a background check process unique to the Apple Campus 2 construction project, a few applicants were turned away because they had been convicted of a felony within the past seven years," an Apple spokesman said in a written statement. "We recognize that this may have excluded some people who deserve a second chance. We have now removed that restriction and instructed our contractors on the project to evaluate all applicants equally, on a case by case basis, as we would for any role at Apple."

Almost overnight, Apple has gone from foe to friend among felons striving to "transition back into society" and find work where available.

Well done, Apple. Everyone makes mistakes, but it takes some guts to say you were wrong and change.
