Default Did BMW Source Just Confirm Apple's Bold Automobile Plans?

Will they or won't they. It's the biggest question since "who shot JR?"

Whether Apple ultimately produces its own electric automobile (or not) remains to be seen. But new comments from BMW's head of R&D are sparking new discussions today about Apple's potential plans.

BMW research and development chief Klaus Froehlich tells Reuters that there would be obstacles to working with Apple on anything beyond simply making Apple products work well within BMW vehicles. The reason? It sounds like BMW is aware of certain future plans on the part of Apple. And BMW doesn't want any of its core secrets compromised.

Although Froehlich didn't rule out the prospect of collaborating with Apple in a bigger way, it doesn't sound likely. "We do not collaborate to open our ecosystem, but we find ways because we respect each other," Froehlich said.

"Apple is looking beyond mobile devices to learn how to make a self-driving electric car, and is talking to experts at carmakers and automotive suppliers," Reuters reports, citing a senior auto industry source.

For now, Apple isn't formally giving any clues to it's long-term automobile objectives -- assuming there are any.

Apple will not make a car. End of discussion. They may partner with an automaker on a more integrated auto ecosystem, and may jhire auto experts to help that, but they will not make a car.

This is exactly like the Apple television rumors that continue to persist long after it was pretty clear they were just making the Apple TV box.
