Default Apple and Tesla: What's Up Here?

It's a wild rumor, for sure. But it's one that won't go away despite Tim Cook's admission that Apple has no relationship with the auto maker... yet.

But could Apple really acquire Tesla? For now, there's no evidence to believe it will. But some Apple investors are literally salivating at the thought.

"At first glance, it's hard to see many similarities between a smartphone company that just got into the watch business and a start-up that makes electric cars," CNN Money was compelled to report following a burst of rumors and questions prompted by Apple investors. "But the idea may not be as farfetched as it seems. Apple is rumored to be working on an electric car of its own."

As the report notes, even big-league Apple investor Carl Icahn recently said he looks forward to driving an Apple car one day. Just how far away -- if ever -- "one day" really is remains to be seen. But Tim Cook isn't saying "no" to the possibility of an Apple car or even a Tesla acquisition.

"We are very focused on CarPlay," Cook said at the latest shareholder meeting, subsequently stating with a smile that he is fully aware of the fact that he dodged a direct question about a Tesla acquisition or the prospect of an Apple Car.

Clearly, the rumor mill has found new fodder. And now we're all along for the ride until Apple either slams on the breaks or takes us to the destination of Apple car's grand unveiling.

I don't believe Apple has ever bought a company over $1B. With Tesla at over $24B, I think it's unlikely Apple will make such a purchase.

They should have been shopping 5 years ago.

Since Tesla has one of the best batteries in the industry, maybe Apple is working with them on battery technology that can be implemented in their mobile devices. Apple has been in the news lately about bringing in-house battery development people. Not too much of a stretch to think the two companies might be sharing for the betterment of both.

    Edit:

Wasn't Apple initially buying Beats for something closer to $4 Billion?

Not sure how many share of tesla Musk owns, but if it's less than 50% Apple could buy Tesla whether it's up for sale or not.

IF Apple wanted to make a car, which I strongly believe they do not, the only question is, do they think they can get from zero to where Tesla is now (or where they think Tesla will be when Apple could go to market) for less than the price to acquire Tesla?

Hostile takeover? I've always wondered how those things work. Apple certainly has the money.
