Default Apple's CarPlay Set to Make its Way to 40 New Car Models This Year

Apple recently announced that its iOS-centered infotainment system, CarPlay, will be incorporated into 40 new car models made by various major automotive manufacturers in 2015. The move expands the platform’s footprint in the industry. According to CEO Tim Cook, “every major” carmaker is now on board with CarPlay. It should be noted that he did fail to name specific partners.

For those of you who didn’t already know, CarPlay appears to have a slow adoption rate thus far. As of right now, only a handful of shipping vehicles support the standard, which means that most people are stuck obtaining an aftermarket dash unit from Alpine or Pioneer if they want to use the technology. More recently, Volkswagen and Chevrolet have announced plans to ship CarPlay models later this year allowing a larger number of people to get their hands on the tech.

Apple’s CarPlay is said to be one of the multiple infotainment options that automakers are going to offer. Many will still continue to offer their proprietary systems and in some cases, even offer Google’s Android Auto technology. We’ll have to see how CarPlay fares going forward.

Any Os-specific head unit is a bad idea, especially when it would be equally easy to make an Os-agnostic unit that can connect with and display any phone screen/features.

There's no way I'm buying a car I plan to keep for at least 10 years tied to one phone brand, nor will I want to go through the hassle of replacing the head unit with a different one just because I change phones. (not to mention that phones 10 year from now will probably no longer be compatible with the current CarPlay head units)
