Default CEO of Mercedes Benz Compares Rumors of an Apple Car to Mercedes Making a Smartphone

With all the rumors and reports floating around the web, there has been a large buzz surrounding Apple entering the auto industry. News such as this typically involves the usual series of bitter industry leaders who knock on Apple and claim to be unaffected by the news because they have been in the industry for a long time whereas a company such as Apple is attempting to dabble in the industry for the first time. Filling in the cliché role this time is the head of Mercedes-Benz, Dieter Zetsche, who recently mentioned the following to Motoring.com.au regarding the topic:

If there were a rumour that Mercedes or Daimler planned to start building smartphones then they (Apple) would not be sleepless at night. And the same applies to me.
Zetsche went on to claim that his position in saying that Apple building a car would be the same as Mercedes building a smartphone is one that is “full of respect” for the iPhone manufacturer. Past examples of the same situation would be former Palm CEO, Ed Colligan’s statement about the iPhone where he said:

PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.
Unsurprisingly, Apple ended up proving him wrong.

Furthermore, Nick Hayek, the CEO of Swatch made similar claims about the smartwatch market claiming that Swatch didn’t feel threatened by the industry. Low and behold, Swatch is now scrambling as it plans its own smartwatch just in time for the debut of the Apple Watch which is set to be released in April.

What makes Zetsche’s statement fall under the same category even more is the fact that Apple recently hired, but many could say poached, the head of research and development from Mercedes Benz. The hire was made among a list of other auto industry experts and news of the company’s electric vehicle project circulating the web.

We’ll have to wait and see what Apple actually ends up doing and how others react to the news.

Come on Ashkay, you’re better than this.
A PC and an iPhone have significant similarities. An iPod and an iPhone even moreso, they were half way there already. iPod + Baseband chip = iPhone.
Whilst it’s not impossible for Apple to make a success out of a car, even rabid fanboys must be able to see that making a car and a phone are poles apart.
Apple are great at consumer electronics, but there are so many other skills sets required in making a car it just isn’t funny. If Apple mainly rebadge then it’s doable but they sure as hell won’t be tooling this from the ground up or anywhere close to that in the early stages.
