Default Apple Removes Cuba from its Restricted Country List for Foreign Trading

Apple recently removed Cuba from its restricted country list for foreign trade – a move that reflects the fact that some of its hardware and software are now legally eligible to be exported to the Caribbean country. The Cupertino California company’s new stance seems to be in accordance with the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security which recently amended its Export Administration Regulations. The change creates an exception for Consumer Communication Devices that fall under the license entitled “Support for the Cuban People.”

In addition to this, the Cuban Asset Control Regulations were also updated by the US Department of the Treasury authorizing export and re-exports of items authorized by the BIS. The relaxed government policies all follow an announcement from President Barack Obama who previously said that the new rules easing the US government’s stance toward the nation of Cuba would take effect.

The new rules that were related to consumer electronics and software allows devices to be sold to Cuban government owned, operated or controlled companies and corporations for resale to the Cuban people. Companies from the US can also provide services such as cloud storage, support and services related to the use of hardware and software. In an effort to comply with ongoing US embargoes, the nations of North Korea, Sudan and Syria remain prohibited destinations for Apple products. As of right now, certain restrictions also continue to exist in Iran.
