Default Apple Reportedly Gearing Up To Enter the Electric Car Market

The cloud of rumors surrounding the Apple-branded vehicle have begun to thicken as a new report claims that Apple is working on an all-electric vehicle that would take the shape of a minivan with a huge team tasked to handle the project. According to the folks over at The Wall Street Journal, Apple has given the project codename “Titan” and has allocated “several hundred” employees to work on the project. Apple CEO, Tim Cook, reportedly gave the project the “green-light” almost a year ago with company executives already meeting with potential contract manufacturers, including Canadian firm Magna Steyr. Furthermore, the project is said to be run by Steve Zadesky, formerly of Ford.

The team reportedly even has its own developmental facility away from the main Infinite Loop campus. The number of employees behind the project could eventually increase to roughly 1,000 with Zadesky given free rein to pull talent from any existing Apple group. As of right now, the group is reportedly researching “robotics, metals and materials consistent with automobile manufacturing.” The WSJ report follows a similar report from the folks over at the Financial Times who revealed a “top-secret research lab” staffed with automotive executives including the former Mercedes-Benz R&D head, Johann Jungwirth. Furthermore, Apple design chief, Jony Ive, is said to be personally recruiting automotive executives to help strengthen the company’s team.

This seems to be in line with other information that has been circulating including Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, revealing earlier that Apple has tried “very hard” to poach engineers from the electric car manufacturer – even going as far as offering $250,000 bonuses and 60% pay raises.

For those of you who didn’t know, there have been rumors of an Apple-branded vehicle circulating for years but have recently begun to gather steam after it was revealed that the company was behind a fleet of mysterious vans which have appeared around the US in recent months. The vans, which are almost certainly designed for data collection to augment Apple’s mapping service are unlikely to be directly related to the potential vehicle project which is most likely several years away from production.

We’ll have to wait and see what’s really going on by being patient.

The iCar! Where you'll need to wait for a few model upgrades before the "Turn Left" feature is added, and it will only drive on Apple approved iRoads.

Couldn't be a bigger, No Thanks. LOL even the price alone is going to be such a rip off.

    No, no they are not.

Anybody entertaining this idea is insanely stupid. Apple may be working on car components/features, but not a car. Never a car.

They'll sooner make a simple television, which will also never happen despite all the wild rumors from so-called reliable sources for years.

Only remote chance of this happening is if they just buy Tesla outright.
