Default Tim Cook Set to Speak at the White House Cybersecurity Summit This Friday

Apple CEO Tim Cook is reportedly set to speak to participants at Friday’s White House Summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection. The event is designed to bring together representatives from all sides of the cybersecurity and privacy debate. At the summit, President Obama is expected to discuss his new cybersecurity “executive action” which calls for increased cooperation between technology companies in the US and the Department of Homeland Security’s National Cybersecurity and Communications Integrations Center, among other things.

It’s unclear what role Cook will be playing in the whole matter but several of the scheduled panels discuss topics that he would be able to speak about. Among these topics are discussions of public-private collaboration for cybersecurity, improving cybersecurity practices at consumer-oriented businesses and organizations, promoting more secure payment technologies and improving authentication by moving beyond the password.

Unsurprisingly, Cook is in a unique position to speak about some of the topics considering Apple Pay is designed with several security and privacy safeguards such as Touch ID. Apple has also opened Touch ID to developers too, allowing those who wish to utilize the password-based authentication to do so. A number of companies have adopted the system for their iOS apps including financial companies such as American Express.

The White House Summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection is set to be held this upcoming Friday, February 13, at Stanford University.

Get ready for Obama to push his oppressive Net Neutrality plan.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler recently acknowledged that the two Democrats on the commission had decided to avoid Congressional input regarding the Internet by adopting President Franklin Roosevelt’s 1934 Communications Act to regulate the Internet with the same federal control as the old AT&T customer monopoly. To make sure that libertarian advocates would remain in the dark, Wheeler “embargoed” release of any of the specifics in the new administrative “policy” that will act as law.
