As we are getting closer to the launch of the Apple Watch, Nick Hayek CEO of Swatch has announced today that they will also be releasing their own smartwatch line in the next three months. Since Apple has already confirmed that they are on track of launching the wearable device in April, Swatch’s plan will definitely be going up against the Cupertino-based company.

Reports are claiming that Hayek previously questioned the success of smartwatches and didn’t see it as being the next revolution. Hayek isn’t the first person to question the smartwatch market as TAG Heuer’s interim chief executive Jean-Claude Biver also felt the same way. However, both companies will soon be releasing their own wearable device.

Previously, there were rumors circulating the web claiming the Cupertino-based company and Swatch would be teaming up and creating a smartwatch together. But Swatch denied these rumors last year. According to Bloomberg,

“Entrepreneurs are practical people, and they care more about being successful than being consistent,” said Luca Solca, an analyst at Exane BNP Paribas. “Hayek has always said they have relevant technology for a smartwatch -- sensors, display, battery -- and seems to be set to make the most [of] it. Better to have an option and a hand in this category than not to. Nobody can yet say how relevant smartwatches will be in the end.”
Based on these claims, Hayek believes they have the upper hand and feels they have a chance at practically going head-to-head with Apple in this category. Who’s smartwatch would you purchase and why? Let us know in the comments below.
