Default Microsoft Unveils its Latest Move into Hardware, the HoloLens, its Holographic Headset

Microsoft recently announced its latest move into hardware unveiling an all-new augmented reality headset named “HoloLens.” The device will enable users to see and manipulate holographic images in real-time without a tethered computer. As a whole, the device looks like a headband with a glass shield that surrounds the wearer’s eyes. It supposedly contains a full computer including what Microsoft claims is a “high-end” CPU and GPU along with an in-house “holographic processing unit.”

The glass shield itself is see-through and as a result, projects holograms directly over what the user sees rather than compositing them with external video, showing the resulting images on a display. Microsoft even built in “spatial sound” which will project a three-dimensional soundstage all around the wearer in order to identify and interact with holograms in any orientation.

The HoloLens is controlled via gestures and voice commands. Microsoft demoed the device’s capabilities on stage by using it to design an autonomous drone – a process that one of the executives compared to “print preview for 3D printing.” The recent announcement comes just days after Google halted public sales of its controversial Glass wearable and reorganized the division under former Apple iPod chief, Tony Fadell.

One thing to note here is that Microsoft developed HoloLens in partnership with scientists at NASA who expect to roll the devices out to space agency researchers later this year. As of right now, the company hasn’t released any details regarding pricing or general public availability. It’s still interesting to see the wave of the future technology that companies are working on now.
