Default Google Chromecast and Amazon's Fire TV Eat Up Streaming Marketshare from Apple and Roku

Unsurprisingly, cheap streaming media players like Google’s Chromecast and Amazon’s Fire TV are rapidly cannibalizing sales of streaming device heavyweights Apple and Roku with Apple TV dropping its long-held second place spot to the Internet search giant’s latest attempt on the living room. According to recent research data from market research firm Parks Associates, the streaming media device industry shifted in 2014 toward upstart players Google and Amazon.

As of right now, Roku still leads in marketshare and accounts for 29% of sales though the number is down drastically from 2013 when the Roku took almost half of the market. Google Chromecast ended up jumping into second place with a 20% share, knocking down Apple TV from its spot which currently holds 17% of the market. Apple shed 9 points from last year with sales almost entirely going to Google and newcomer Amazon which itself captured a 10% marketshare.

Barbara Kraus, the director of research at Parks Associates, had the following to say regarding the matter:

Nearly 50% of video content that U.S. consumers watch on a TV set is non-linear, up from 38% in 2010, and it is already the majority for people 18-44. The market is changing rapidly to account for these new digital media habits. Roku now offers a streaming stick, and Amazon's Fire TV streaming stick leaves Apple as the only top player without a stick product in the streaming media device category.
The Apple TV continues to see stiff competition from cheap hardware that offers similar functionality for a fraction of the cost as it maintains a price of $99. Options such as the Google Chromecast which sell for a $35 price tag represent less of an investment for consumers. That being said the streaming market will continue to grow in the coming years and Parks Associates estimates that 2017 will bring almost 50 million streaming devices sold globally.

The Apple TV has long been rumored for a revamp though no concrete evidence has been released. We’ll have to wait and see what happens by being patient.

If people could jailbreak the ATV3 it would sell like hotcakes. Look at the crazy prices people are willing to pay for an ATV2.
I own a Roku, Chromcast, 2 ATV2's and a pre-ordered Fire Stick. I like the ATV2 & the Roku, not real excited about the Chromecast.

Any word on a jailbreak for the ATV3? Thats why it doesn't sell well. You cant stream movies from a NAS to it, thats why I never use mine. Its a dust collector and its still waiting for a jailbreak.
By the looks of it the ATV3 is the only device thats not jailbroken and cant be jailbroken. I really regret getting it now. Its a useless piece of junk. I got a WDTV shortly after getting the ATV3 and use that instead. Its heaps better, does a lot more and links to my Galaxy S5 so happier with that than I've ever been with the ATV3.

I switched to Amazon Fire. Works great with my NAS and XBMC runs great on it.

I've heard it's only even remotely worth it if you have prime. What do you think? I'm debating on getting one, but can't decide.

But if you root it and run XBMC or Plex it becomes an entirely different device. I have 2 of them and then I have an Xbox on all other tv' as they can access my NAS too.

I am waiting on the stick. Anyone know if it is possible to root these also... I am hoping to put XBMC on it if possible.
On a side note... So does Amazon not try to prevent rooting? I have not played with them yet.

Not like Apple does with JB'ing.

Not sure how the stick will work, as XBMC is like 50mb and you would have to save it to the stick. I'm not saying no, I've just never done it or seen it done. Time to hit the damn droid forums.

I really don't need it, thats why I haven't bought a FireTV. The stick was a Prime pre-order deal at $20 bucks... I figured I have wasted more than that on a Chromcast, why the hell not get one. LOL It is due here in a week or so.

It has 1gb of memory and 8gb of flash storage.
Here are the specs - Amazon Fire TV Stick | 9to5Google

EDIT - It came today! No time to check it out yet but soon!

So as it turns out you can side load the apps via Terminal on a Mac. I really only needed XBMC. It was all pretty straight forward. Other than the UI can lag at times I am happy with it so far.
