Default LinkNYC Program Set to Bring Digital Hubs to Replace Pay Phones in New York City

Residents and visitors of New York City may have a largely improved internet experience in the near future, all thanks to the new LinkNYC program. The program is an initiative to replace the aging pay phones with modern “Link Structures” which will broadcast access to free, gigabit WiFi and allow users to place free domestic phone calls. The pylons will be powered by a touchscreen Android tablet integrated into the device which will also provide access to city services and directions.

Furthermore, the pylons will also serve as a quick battery top-up location all while adding built-in light. The program even claims that these pylons take up less space than pay phones and add much-needed room to New York’s crowded sidewalks.

The LinkNYC program plans to pay for the rollout through advertisements that will run on digital screens inside each pylon, making it free to taxpayers. According to the program outline, it is expecting to bring in roughly $500 million in revenue for the city over the first dozen years of operation. LinkNYC plans to begin construction in 2015 with the first pylons coming online by the end of next year. More will continue to roll out with a total of 10,000 structures planned across all five boroughs.

As of right there isn’t any word on which WiFi technology the device will utilize and there isn’t any information on the company set to provide the connection. We’ll have to wait for more information to be revealed but in the meantime the thought of is definitely one that is welcome!

This actually seems like a pretty legit idea! I've never been to NYC, but I can tell you these would certainly be welcome in my town!

    Just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!
