Default Google Wallet Sees Increase in Users After Apple Pay Launch

Ars Technica recently reported that Google Wallet has seen a 50% increase in weekly transactions ever since Apple launched their newest NFC mobile payments feature, Apple Pay. Google Wallet was released back in 2011 but failed to gain any success with users. However, ever since Apple Pay started, Google Wallet has actually benefited from the publicity generated by the Cupertino-based company. It was reported that the number of users has almost doubled in the last few months. According to Ars Technica,

NFC-based mobile payments have had a boost in recent months, possibly thanks to the launch of Apple Pay, which was announced in September. Now, a person with knowledge of the matter tells Ars that Google Wallet, which launched back in 2011 and saw tepid success in the ensuing three years, has had considerable growth in the last couple of months. According to our source, weekly transactions have increased by 50 percent, and in the recent couple of months, new users have nearly doubled compared to the previous month.
Google Wallet is similar to Apple Pay in that it also allows users to pay on the smartphone with a virtual payment card. One big difference is that gift cards and person-to-person payments are also supported on Google Wallet. Apple Pay was released to the public last month and had apparently received 1 million card activations the first three days of launch. When they first launched, many major retailers and credit card companies were already backing up the major tech company. This is not to say all retail companies supported Apple Pay, as we saw the clear case of CVS and Rite Aid suspending the mobile payments option not long after starting it.

Have you used Apple Pay yet? What are your thoughts on the feature? Let us know in the comments below.
