Default WSJ: Spotify Royalties Best iTunes in Europe

Across the pond, Spotify royalties are surging ahead of iTunes, indicating that the war for streaming supremacy among artists and fans alike has reached a new perch of intensity.

Freshly published data from Kobalt Music Publishing shows that its songwriters raked in 13% more from Spotify streams in Europe (in Q1 of 2014) than it did from iTunes downloads. When you take into consideration that the publishing group reps such music heavyweights as Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks, this revelation is particularly important and telling as to how the streaming music industry is evolving.

Even the WSJ was compelled this week to report that this development "represents a rapid and dramatic change."

"Kobalt writers earned 32% more from European iTunes sales than from Spotify royalties in the third quarter of 2013, and 8% more from iTunes in the fourth quarter that year," the report reads.

In the U.S., however, Kobaltís songwriters still see the biggest paydays from iTunes when compared with Spotify.

All streaming royalties are crap. I worry about music trends. If artists start only being paid crap that's all they're going to start making.

    ......beware......
