Default Ive Talks Apple Watch Design Challenges

On Friday, Apple's design guru Jony Iva shared some telling insight into the design challenges he and his colleagues faced as they worked to bring Apple's first smartwatch to life.

Ive is quoted by the WSJ this morning saying that he believes with “every bone in his body” that Apple Watch is going to be a game changer for wearables. How so? By reinventing a nascent category of computer devices.

Ive told an audience at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Thursday night that designing the smartwatch posed more challenges than the iPhone because of societal expectations around a wristwatch. The wrist, he said, is an ideal place for “lightweight interactions” and “casual glancing,” but not for heavy reading.
“Even though Apple Watch does so many things, there are cultural, historical implications and expectations,” Ive told those in attendance. “That’s why it’s been such a difficult and humbling program.”

Another challenge, of course, is dealing with consumer expectations. Whenever Apple comes out with a product, Ive asserts, consumers raise their expectations for that particular product category. This is something Ive was keenly aware of during the Apple Watch design process.

And in case you're wondering, no, he didn't reveal when Apple Watch will launch. We're still stuck with "early 2015."

Spelling error in the first sentence you wrote Jony Iva (with an A) and it should be Jony Ive (ending with an E)
