Default Chipmaker Says Apple's NFC Effort Can Eliminate Car Keys

One day soon, you may never have to worry about losing your car keys again. As long as you don't lose your iPhone, you'll be fine.

The folks at NXP Semiconductors seem to think that Apple's embrace of Near Field Communications (NFC) technology can -- and should -- be used to eliminate the need for car keys and relegate the jingly medal pieces to the trash bin of history.

"Once they saw these announcements in September they kind of realized there was no going back on this technology so they better get moving and be quick on it," Drue Freeman, Senior Vice President for global automotive sales & marketing at NXP, is quoted by Reuters.

Today, the company is rolling out a new array NFC components designed specifically for automobiles. Freeman didn't divulge which car makers might be interested in integrating the technology, but European luxury cars may begin introducing the technology as soon as 2016.

NFC, Freeman says, doesn't represent an opportunity to revolutionize car electronics but it can make standard features and functions more convenient and efficient, beginning with the elimination of car keys to unlock car doors or even start an automobile's ignition.

Car manufactures have already been using key-less entry and key-less ignitions systems. Nothing new, just instead of a key fob in your pocket and touching the door handle and pressing the ignition button, you use your phone in your pocket now.

Would this have stopped my keyless Range Rover from being stolen in London, along with everyone else ?

What if your iPhone runs out of battery? Most newer cars don't power the 12V charging ports unless the engine is on to make sure you don't drain your battery, so you'd have no way to charge your phone, and thus no way to turn on your car. Better hope you're somewhere you can charge that puppy back up...

This seems like a very bad idea.

I imagine there would be a manual override.
