Default New Quarterly Record for R&D Spending at Apple

Ahead of new product cycles at Apple come major investments in research and development.

As a result, you may not be shocked to learn that quarterly spending on research and development hit a new all-time high last quarter as Apple prepared to unveil its new lineup of iPhones, iPads, and, of course, the company's first smartwatch set for an early 2015 release.

Per the details made public this week in the company's 10-K filing with the SEC, Apple coughed up a whopping $1.7 billion on research & development last quarter. That brings Apple's total expenditure on R&D in fiscal 2014 to a staggering $6 billion.

Apple said in the filing that it "continues to believe that focused investments in R&D are critical to its future growth and competition in the marketplace and are directly related to timely development of new and enhanced products that are central to the Company's core business strategy."

Although Apple isn't providing any numbers of guidance, the company says in the same filing that it fully expects "to make further investments in R&D to remain competitive."

Sounds to me like they got a good deal... Spend a billion bucks get a hundred or so billion back.
