Default WSJ: Apple's September Media Event Was Expensive

Apple's media events may be big news, but they don't seem like big expenses. It's a simple stage, with a simple jumbo screen, and a casual array of Apple executives and company partners discussing the latest lineup of Apple products.

Well, it may not appear to be an expensive event to hold, but as it turns out, these occasional Apple announcements cost some big bucks to orchestrate. That much is clear from a new Wall Street Journal report.

According to the details presented, Apple paid more than $1 million just to stage last month's iPhone 6/Apple Watch presentation. Records procured from the Foothill-De Anza Community College district pinpoints the exact expenses that added up so quickly.

The September 9th event was held at the college’s Flint Center for the Performing Arts.

"For the Sept. 9 event," the report explains, "Apple agreed to pay $55,000 to use the college’s Media and Learning Center, $92,000 for the Campus Center and nearly $10,000 for two parking lots. Apple was also responsible for restoring the balustrades surrounding the sunken garden where the temporary structure was located, at an estimated cost of $400,000 to $450,000."

Given that Apple sold 10 million new iPhones in the device's opening weekend of sales, we doubt Apple misses the million bucks it shelled out for the event to reveal the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Nonetheless, if you were in the camp that never considered the cost of hosting a media event at Apple's level, consider yourself enlightened.

Well, when I worked for Apple (2011-2013), as a part-timer, I was the first one in our store to sell $1 million in a fiscal year, so yeah, that's pretty-much chump change to them.
