Apple has a long history of taking its sweet time to fill important roles at the company, never rushing to promote from within or scour the globe at large for the right fit.

But in the wake of Katie Cotton's departure several months ago, Apple has been on the lookout for someone to fill the void left by the former communications chief. As it turns out, Apple is still looking. But the company has tapped a familiar face to serve in Cotton's former role for the time being.

Re/Code was first to report that longtime Apple PR veteran Steve Dowling is now in the big seat, serving as the interim communications chief. We're told the decision to put Dowling in that position (for now) was made only last week by Apple CEO Tim Cook himself.

Although Dowling is a trusted and respected leader at Apple in the communications department, we're told that Apple's search for a permanent replacement for Cotton is still ongoing.
