Default Apple TV Software Update Released

Although this update is certainly going to fall short of earning the degree of digital ink trailing the release of iOS 8 today, Apple delivered to its Apple TV today a new software update that you may have already noticed.

While the Apple TV itself (the hardware) hasn't been updated since early 2012, Apple continues to augment its content offerings through the set-top streaming platform. Today's update, however, brings some of the familiar new design attributes of iOS 8 to Apple TV.

Apart from the flatter appearance of the new Apple TV home screen, the real meat and potatoes of the software release comes in the form of the new channels added to Apple TV's lineup.

The biggest addition comes in the form of a new Beats music channel, which doesn't come as a surprise given Apple's recent acquisition of the subscription streaming music service.

Additionally, Apple is giving users a long-requested feature in the form of Family Sharing. In short, an array of Apple IDs can now be connected to the platform.

For those hoping to iCloud Photo Library support, you're in luck as Apple is extending to Apple TV the same feature that can also be found in today's iOS 8 update.

    Mirroring can handle that.

No, right now streaming from your iPhone goes to your router then to the Apple TV.
There's an update coming which will allow you to stream straight from your iPhone to your Apple TV, cutting out the middle man improving speeds.

Can't believe they are still supporting this antiquated hardware.

    No, it's done wifi

    The old way:
iPhone to router to Apple TV through wifi

    The new way:
iPhone to Apple TV through wifi

I'm just asking did the new update on the Apple TV implement this feature or not?

How exactly is it going to connect via Wifi unless the iPhone is transmitting via it's Wifi signal? The ATV doesn't allow tethering (afaik) so this Wifi signal could only come from the iphone.

Bluetooth, on the other hand, is available on both devices and uses low power consumption.

Wi-Fi Direct devices can connect to each other without having to go through an access point, that is to say you don't need to use your router.
This is because Wi-Fi Direct devices establish their own ad-hoc networks as and when required, letting you see which devices are available and choose which one you want to connect to.

Like iPhones and iPads now can airdrop to each other...
