Default Russian Officials Want Information from Apple

Mother Russia has come looking for Apple.

According to a report this morning from Reuters, Russia wants Apple and SAP to fork over to their government access to their source code. Why? To ensure that their popular products aren't being used for espionage.

That's right, Russia is concerned that iPhones and similar smart mobile devices are highly capable of "spying on state institutions." The timing of this report is certainly logical as the U.S. and Europe weigh intense sanctions against Russia in response to its policies and positioning on Ukraine.

Just yesterday, the United States brought new sanctions against Russian institutions, including a number of large and prominent banks in the nation.

Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov recently met with Apple officials in Russia to discuss, as Reuters puts it, a proposal "designed to ensure the rights of consumers and corporate users to the privacy of their personal data, as well as for state security interests."

For now, Apple isn't commenting on its potential response to Russia's requests.

This is Russia's way of sanctioning USA. They will probably ban iOS because Apple won't give up their source code.

    Russia is becoming CCCP again.

It won't be long before Russian citizens need to use a can on a string. Communism breeds paranoia.

Many laugh at this.. why? .. it's perfectly legitimate for them to have that concern... NSA hasn't spied on the US? .. why not be concerned of popular US tech flooding their country...

We're being spied on by our own govt. .... so russia doing this seems natural... the whole thing on both ends concerns the hell out of me though... we shouldn't be spying on our own people... and Russia shouldn't have their legit concerns.. but they do .. we have really over stepped our bounds

The spying business is a concern, but that's not Russians reason to obtain iOS source code. They do that because they know they won't get it and they "will have to" ban it in Russia so that US economy suffers.

They're not 'sanctioning' US economy. They are doing "the right thing" for Russian citizens. It's their propaganda, nothing else. In this particular case.
