Default Rare Look Inside 1990 Apple Mac Classic Offered By Teardown

Hardware enthusiast Ben Heck, known primarily for miniaturizing and modifying game consoles, recently provided a glimpse at the internal workings of the first $1,000 Mac Classic. Heck stated that he was able to get his hands on a 1990 model for a ‘great price,’ and repainted the case. He filmed the teardown in his weekly Ben Heck Show. Removal of the case first reveals a RAM expansion card that lets users put in an additional 2-4 MB of memory using 30-pin SIMMs. The original Mac Classic shipped with 512 kilobytes of ROM and 1MB of RAM.

Next is a 40MB Apple-branded SCSI hard disk. The drive has surface-mounted chips from Motorola, Cirrus Logic, Adaptec, only to name a few, and has been modified with the addition of a diode which jumps across circuits. The logic board has a VLSI chip that has graphics and sound processors, including a SCSI controller for the hard drive and a 15 megahertz crystal.

The Mac Classic was most likely manufactured in 1991 and looking at the internal processors help show how far technology has come. The computer was also on $1000 which makes the price point impressive. As of today, a MacBook Air or MacBook Mini can be purchased for less and be more powerful.
