Default Variations in SSD Speeds for 2014 MacBook Airs Said to be caused by Drive Brand Mix

    2014 MacBook Air

    2013 MacBook Air

Apple has used many different suppliers for the solid-state drives (SSDs) in its MacBook Air models, with varying drive performance dependent on manufacturer brands. Macworld has released a recent study that demonstrated dramatic differences in SSD read and write speeds in 2013 and 2014 models. However, it is unclear if the poorer performance in the 2014 model was because of drive brand variances or if it was something in particular to the 2014 devices causing a decrease in performance. Other World Computing also recently performed testing between the 2013 and 2014 models with SanDisk SSDs, but found the performance between the two are almost the same.

It was reported that OWC tested using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, and the new MacBook Air with a 128GB SanDisk SSD showed read/write speeds of 205/315 MBps whereas the 2013 version had relatively the same read/write speeds of 711/316 MBps. Macworld’s testing included drives of two different capacities from a few different manufacturers, this making it hard to find the exact reason of the performance differences. The fluctuation in brand performance was noticed many years ago when Apple used Toshiba and Samsung SSSs in the MacBook Air models, including units from Toshiba, SanDisk, and Samsung.

Apple’s new MacBook Air is available starting at $899 and is available from the Apple website, and the 2013 models are being sold at a number of retailers at significant discounts.

You do mean 705/315 and not 205/315 right?
