Default Retail Giants Begin Paying Out Credits for eBook Price Fixing

The day of reckoning has come.

On Tuesday, a hefty chunk of cash began its journey back into the pockets of ebook buyers who were reportedly victimized by the price fixing scandal that rocked the publishing world in recent years, causing no shortage of headaches for Apple, Amazon, and others.

As of this afternoon, electronic book buyers are now receiving account credits from settlements reached with book publishers over the scandal in question. According to USA Today, the credits apply to qualifying books purchased through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo or Apple between April 2010 and May 2012.

Amazon has already started processing credits. "Under the settlements, the publishers have provided funds for credits that will be applied directly to accounts of eligible customers," the online retail giant explains on its website.

    The settlements total $166 million.

"Companies engaging in such anticompetitive conduct will be punished—and starting today, those injured by their actions will start to receive full and fair compensation," said New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
