Default Offline Version of SimCity to be released in Next Update

For those of you who remember last year’s SimCity launch, you’ll remember the debacle around its online play requirement. The game finally found its way to OS X in August and the same issue arose. One important fact to remember here is that EA and Maxis both apologized and while gamers blamed the online play model, the company said that adding an offline play mode to SimCity was “not possible.” The developers must have been quite busy for the past few months as EA recently revealed that SimCity would be getting an offline option in an upcoming update.

The news makes it quite obvious that the online requirement was a stand-in for DRM, which is essentially just a way to ensure pirated copies of the game weren’t playable. It seems that EA has finally decided it may just be better to let SimCity fans play a not-broken, standalone version of the game.

What makes the whole situation a bit more entertaining was the reaction that many had to the announcement, since practically no gamers believed that an offline SimCity was “impossible” to begin with. EA hasn’t explained how it managed to make it happen, likely because it was never an obstacle in the first place at all, but if you’re still interested in the game, you can play offline when Update 10 lands.

Don't waste your money. They sacrificed map size for increased detail, but who really cares about being able to follow individual cars or people? If I wanted "The Sims" I would have bought "The Sims".

Yeah... the small maps was the reason why I didn't buy this piece of crap! The gameplay was brilliant... nice animations... but after 4-6 hours of play... there is no place to expand you city.

EA manages to screw every game it touches... ME3... Dead Space 3... Simcity and lastly PvZ 2
I'm sure that even if they are capable of expanding the map size... they won't do it. They'll come out with Simcity 2 without an offline mode till almost a year is up. I've stopped purchasing EA games (that doesn't mean I don't play them :P )...

I invest my money in Ubisoft & Telltale games. They're brilliant and deserving as well.. I hope Watch Dogs wins the GOTY 2014 (since 'The Division' isn't going to be out till 2015 if the rumors are true)

Sure! The game play itself is still fun, but as jigar7 pointed out, after a few hours of play you run our of space to expand your city. At that point your only option is to move to another region and start a new city from scratch.

No the gameplay is NOT brilliant, unless your definition of "brilliant" is like a game that fundamentally doesnt work the way it should. Someone should round up a list of ALL the developers who worked on "Sim City 2013" and keep it posted somewhere so future employers can see not to hire any of those idiots. They should NOT be involved in making games. They should be putting games and prizes into your happy meal but thats about it...

I don't know why all the crying and hate is about, I'm a casual gamer and I love simcity 5. Sure it may not be the best version, but no other company makes a game like it. Simcity is still the best city-building and urban planning simulation game out there, period!
