Default Japanese Apple Stores to Begin Selling Annual Lucky Bags Starting January 2 Once Again

As a tradition during the New Year in Japan, retailers tend to offer a “Fukubukuro” otherwise known as a “mystery bag,” which is a grab filled with a random assortment of products sold at a steep discount. Apple has participated in the tradition for quite some time and is said to be offering its “Lucky Bag” in several different Apple Retail Stores across Japan on January 2nd once again.

Apple will be selling Lucky Bags for 36,000 yen ($345USD) and the bags will contain items such as iPods, headphones and t-shirts. Last year, a few fortunate people received big-ticket items such as an iPad or MacBook Air. Results of these fortunate prizes have helped make Lucky Bags extremely popular in the country. The grab bags are sold as is with no returns being accepted unless the product is defective.

As with past years, Apple’s Lucky Bag promotion is limited to Japanese customers, though other countries such as China may see the traditional Apple Store sales during the New Year.

That sounds awesome! Totally wish there was a tradition like that here in the states! What awesome gifts that would make for people as well.

My former roommate lived in Japan for two years, and he loved the tradition!
He showed off all the stuff he picked up from fukubukuro: some was weird, some good, and some you'd never expect to buy in a 'grab bag.'
