Default Working Apple I Auctioned for $671,400

Saturday saw an anonymous buyer from the Far East paying a record $671,400 for a working Apple I computer, beating the $640,000 record set last year and doubling the record prior to that according to The New York Times. For those of you who are unaware, when the early Apple computer was first released in 1976, it sold for roughly $666 (equivalent to $2,700 today).

The unit which was recently sold had only own owner from the time it was bought in 1976 until very recently. The owner was a retire electrical engineer living in New Orleans who sold the device to an interested party earlier this year for $40,000. At the time it was originally sold, the computer wasn’t in working condition. The buyer swapped in new components and wiring, making the roughly 40-year-old computer functional again. The buyer then took the Apple I to California and arranged to meet with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak who ended up signing the device as well.

After being informed of the price the device eventually ended up selling for, the original owner had the following to say about its new owner:

My God. Best to him. He's the one who fixed it up and figured the best way to sell it for all that money. Evidently, he's very good at this.
The Apple I was the Cupertino California company’s very first computer and the number of functioning units is thought to be in the single digits. Functioning and non-functioning units that go up for auction generally tend to sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The sale of the recently sold Apple I is still a bit of a surprise as the value it sold for was the highest seen yet.

There is no way I would pay any where near that amount. It is essentially a $671,400 paper weight. What could you possibly do with a 1.0mhz cpu & 4K ram? I would guess this sold for more due to the autograph.

No, I think he is a moron with to much money.
    If I can't mod it...I don't want it.

If I had the money I'd love to have old electronics as collectibles, just a little piece of history. Like what about an original computer screen from an Apollo capsule that went to the moon? Pointless? Maybe. But that'd be pretty awesome to own

I must have read tons of articles on this site, and have been overwhelmed by the amount of kindergarden mistakes they make when writing. Thus, I never comment and I hardly come here. Nice job calling out his laziness- proofreading takes no time.
