Default iTunes in The Cloud Won't Reach UK Until 2012 At Earliest

On Monday, Apple announced in the keynote of WWDC that iTunes was finally destined for the clouds, effectively ending what once felt like an eternal wait for this much-anticipated cloud-based service. Unfortunately for our friends in the UK, however, it appears the wait is far from over.

According to the UK Telegraph, Apple’s cloud music service won't make its way across the pond and to UK-based iTunes users until 2012 at the very earliest. That's according to record label sources and music analysts who've spoken with the British publication this week. The reason? It's all about music rights and royalties.

A spokesman for the Performing Right Society (PRS), which ensures that composers, songwriters and music publishers are paid for their work, told The Telegraph, that negotiations with Apple about ensuring rights in the UK had started but were at a “very early stage.”
Speaking with the Telegraph, the source revealed that the licensing team at the PRS have commenced talks with Apple, "but are a long way off from any deals being signed." At this point, talks remain in the early stages. But there's no reason to believe that the service won't eventually debut in the UK. iTunes, the article reminds us, began in the US and didn't roll out internationally for quite some time.

An anonymous record label executive would only tell the publication that the cloud music service all but certainly won't go live in the UK until the end of the first quarter of 2012.

so did you have to update or anything or did it just automatically start working on 4.3.3? I've read lots of articles lately about how lame iCloud is going to be because it's not actually music streaming, it's just a locker or something like that. But I am freaking pumped for it. except for now i'm stuck in Verizon 4.2.8

Shame about the UK - I wonder when it will reach other countries?

Well I'm in the UK and using some of the Cloud features on my iPhone 4 and iPad. In fact, I have backed up both of those devices to the Cloud and restored the iPad from said backup.

Also, the Purchased list on the App Store is working perfectly as is Photo Stream. Those are all Cloud features, are they not?

Engadget are reporting that it's specifically the iTunes Match feature that wont get to the UK until 2012.

It was automatically working when I updated to 4.3.3 a few days ago
